RONN MOTT: Snowball

It looks as if we’re going to have a winter that looks more as if it were the 19th century rather than the 21st century. Gazing upon Collett Park, the city’s oldest park, it is a thing of silent beauty with the snow draped over everything.

There’s a lot of activity … people running, dog-walking, and a runner I saw chasing after his dog. There is for me, however, a dark side, and that is I’m on a hill where my only entrance to my property is located. Ah, and there lies the tale.

I have an old cement wall that’s been there for a very long time and the opening of that wall is where I get my car onto my property, off the alley and parked. You would think going downhill with snow on the ground would still be a rather easy task. Ah, contraire! I got stuck and stuck good (for days, actually). I thought I would back up to my left, or north, and then swing around and go down the hill front first. But, in the process of swinging around, I went into a slipping slide and ended up stuck rather cattywampus. I couldn’t move forward because of the wall in front of me, and I ended up with my back end pressed against the stump of a small tree I had cut down earlier in the summer. All I ended up doing was more firmly sticking myself in this embarrassment. If it only wasn’t so slippery! So, I tried some cat litter to give me traction, but alas and alack, it did not work.

I do have a snow shovel and a small spade we use for digging, and I looked at the tools and decided … no. I wasn’t about to dig my way into a heart attack. First of all, I’m lazy. Secondly, that kind of exertion combined with my age could be deadly. So, I decided to wait for the next thaw to come that plagues the changing weather patterns in the state of Indiana.

Sure enough, three days later a thaw cam with rain, bidda bing, bidda bong, I wasn’t wrong. I started the car and moved swiftly out of difficulty.

Sometimes I gripe about being in this semi-state of retirement. You’ve heard the complaints … nowhere to go, nothing to do, but in this instance I felt smug and happy being lazy and achieving the result I wanted.

Ronn Mott, a longtime radio personality in Terre Haute, writes commentaries for the Tribune-Star. His pieces are published online Tuesday and Thursday on, and in the print and online editions on Saturday.
