Kegler’s Korner: Bunting, Breshears excelling in collegiate ranks

By Dennis Clark

TERRE HAUTE — A pair of talented products of junior bowling programs in Terre Haute are taking their abundant bowling skills to major universities this season.

Kara Bunting, a graduate of Terre Haute South, is currently one of four freshmen on the Purdue University women’s bowling team. Bunting competed in both the Terre Haute Bowling Center and Vigo Bowl junior programs.

Meanwhile, Allen Breshears, a graduate of Terre Haute North, is a freshman on the men’s bowling team at Vincennes University. Breshears still competes in the Imperial Lanes junior program.

The Purdue women’s team started its season with a second-place performance in the Hammer Midwest Collegiate Bowling Tournament at Wauwatosa, Wis. on Oct. 7-8. In a field of 21 teams, the Boilers finished behind only last year’s national champion Lindenwood University.

According to Bunting, the Boilers were strongest in the Baker-scoring rounds. Purdue began the Baker round 365 pins behind the leader, and by the end of the round were within 80 pins.

Bunting had earlier contemplated going to Central Missouri State University — an NCAA finalist the past three seasons — but more recently opted for Purdue.

“I didn’t want to bowl at an NCAA [bowling] school … they have too many restrictions to how I can bowl,” Bunting said on Thursday. Another plus for Bunting was that CMSU was six hours away from Terre Haute, while Purdue is much, much closer.

As for being at Purdue, Bunting — who is planning to major in Law and Society with a minor in Sociology — quickly added, “I love it here.”

If Bunting wasn’t busy enough, she has also just been elected to a two-year term as President of the United States Bowling Congress Youth Association for the state of Indiana.

The next competition for Purdue will be at the Orange and Black Classic in Beavercreek, Ohio. on Oct. 21-22.

As for Breshears, he had to withstand a rigorous tryout process to land a spot on the Trailblazers men’s squad.

According to his stepfather Phil Cooper, Allen had to compete with 44 bowlers for just four available spots on the team. The competitors bowled for two days, cut to the top 15, then bowled two more days to narrow down to the final four.

VU also competed in the Hammer Midwest Collegiate Tournament, but Breshears did not make the trip as only their top team was entered. Breshears first collegiate action will be at Dayton, Ohio, next weekend.

One of the more talented collegiate bowlers in recent years, Sara Cox, completed her playing career at CMSU last season. Cox — no stranger to the NCAA finals in recent years — finished eighth in the individual competition at the NCAA National Bowling Finals last year in Houston.

n Mark your calendar — A pair of annual local tournaments have distinctly different dates this year than in the past.

The Terre Haute Bowling Center Men’s Shootout will be Nov. 18-19. Entry fee is $65 for bowlers with an average of 180 and over based on 33 games in the 2005-06 season. The first day will start at 1 p.m., the second day at 11 a.m.

Also, the Greater Terre Haute Men’s Association City Tournament has been moved up to the consecutive weekends of Oct. 28-29 and Nov. 4-5. The Bowling Center will host the team event, Imperial Lanes the individual and doubles events.
