KEGLER'S KORNER: City has history as state tourney host

84th Women’s Championship under way at Vigo Bowl, Bowling Center

TERRE HAUTE — The 84th Indiana State Women’s Championship Tournament began its lengthy run in Terre Haute on Saturday and will run each weekend — except Easter weekend — until May 8.

The Greater Terre Haute Women’s Bowling Association is hosting this event for the 11th time, the last time back in 2004. Team event is at Vigo Bowl, while doubles and singles are at the Terre Haute Bowling Center.

Terre Haute has a long history as the host city, dating back to 1925.

The first three times Terre Haute hosted were small tournaments, with just 37 team entrants in 1925, followed by 1927 (35) and 1931 (71).

Next up was 1944 with 233 entrants, despite the tournament being canceled in both 1943 and 1945 due to World War II.

The numbers increased dramatically the next three times Terre Haute hosted. Team entrants in 1952 were 614, more than doubled by 1968 (1,369) and hit its peak in 1983 (1,901). That was one year after the tournament’s largest turnout in Indianapolis of 2,155 teams.

Following a statewide trend, numbers dropped a bit in 1989 (1,830), a bit more in 1997 (1,543), then began a freefall in 2004 (1,004). The tournament had over 1,000 entrants from 1963 to 2005, but last year’s event in Muncie had just 607 entrants, the lowest mark since 1954.

This drop in numbers coincides with the drop in overall statewide membership. The most members in Indiana was in 1980 (137,858), fell below 100,000 in 1990, and was down to 25,994 in the most recent reported year of 2009.

Enough history, now get to bowling ladies! Welcome to Terre Haute.

• Vigo Bowl hosted a Team Shootout on March 19-20. Winning team was Ed Dominick, Josh Snowden, Guy Johnson, Trey Minett, taking home $1,000 in prize money.

Second place ($600) went to Tony Jackewicz, Ernie Scott, Rick Fugate, Brandy Leturgez. Third place ($380) went to Fred Modesitt, Larry Davision, C.J. Cooprider, Harold Costello.

• Driving past the Terre Haute Bowling Center on Friday brought to mind long-time bowling friend Jay Scamihorn, whose name I hadn’t noticed while forming up the weekly bowling results in recent weeks.

My next stop was Lowe’s — purchasing plastic shelf holders because two of them snapped off, creating a tumbling of canned goods which was a good audio imitation of bowling a strike on our kitchen floor — so who did I run into? You guessed it.

Scamihorn, one of the better senior bowlers in the area, reported he’s been sidelined since January due to surgery on his “other” shoulder. He explained this latest surgery was more involved, but still hopes to return to the lanes.

Get well soon.
