Kegler's Korner: Team Drake takes THBC Shootout

TERRE HAUTE — Nine teams competed in the 20th Terre Haute Bowling Center Shootout last weekend (Oct. 30-31) with Team Drake emerging as the champion by a slim nine-pin margin.

Team members Chris Drake, Rick Fugate, Sean Pepper and Trevor Monroney had a score of 8,663. Second place went to Team Nichols (Ryan Nichols, David Paulin, David Monroney, Mike Gambill) at 8,554.

This was an A-B-C-D format tournament. Bowlers were placed in four divisions based on average, with teams picked at random — one from each division.

Overall high individual average in the 10-game tournament was turned in by Brian Taylor (234.1). Other high averages were Nichols 227, Paulin 223, Pepper 220, Fugate 220, Drake 219, Guy Johnson 215, Josh Snowden 215, Doug Weaver 214, Jason Hiddle 214, Darrell Davis 213, Trey Minett 213 and David Monroney 212.

By division, high average leaders were Taylor (A/234.1), Paulin (B/223.6), Pepper (C/220.9) and Kyle Eades (D/205.6). Top money winner was Pepper at $640.

• If you didn’t compete in this tournament, bowlers have another opportunity to “Shootout” — this time at Vigo Bowl.

Vigo’s Team Shootout is Nov. 20-21, with basically the same format. Entry fee is $70. Five games will be rolled on Nov. 21 (1 p.m.) and five more on Nov. 22 (noon).

Teams will be randomly drawn prior to bowling on Nov. 20.

• The Josh Combs Memorial Adult/Youth No-Tap Tournament returns for a second year at 1 p.m. on Dec. 12 at the Terre Haute Bowling Center. Check-in time is noon.

These are two-person teams, rolling three games (handicap) in four average divisions. If you’re not familiar with bowling parlance, “no-tap” means if you knock down nine pins or more on your first shot, that is scored as a strike.

All prizes awarded to junior bowlers are in the form of scholarships.
