The 40th Greater Terre Haute Bowlers Hall of Fame dinner has been set for 6:30 p.m. on April 27 at Excalibur, located at 212 W. National Avenue in West Terre Haute.

Returning for a return engagement, back by popular demand as it were, as featured speaker is Dick Jonckowski, self-proclaimed as the “Polish Eagle” according to HOF Board of Governors member John Hayes.

Jonckowski has been the public address voice of University of Minnesota basketball and baseball since 1986. He has also served as the banquet MC and game PA voice for the American Legion World Series since 1998.

According to Hayes, Jonckowski’s entertaining comedic style of delivery was so good, many asked if he could return this year. And so he is back.

Hayes has known Jonckowski for the past 11 years during his tenure as manager of the Wayne Newton Post 346 American Legion baseball team.

Cost for the dinner is $20.

Also, applications for Hall of Fame selection must be submitted no later than March 16. Applications are available at all area bowling establishments. If someone has trouble obtaining an application, please contact Hayes or someone else on the HOF board.

The bowling community is mourning the loss of Marvin Bucy, who passed away on Wednesday.

I’ve known Marv since bowling with his son Rich as members of the Indiana State University men’s bowling team way back in the 1975-76 school year.

Since then, I would run into Marv and his wife Norma — or see them from across the stands — at too numerous to count Indiana State men’s and women’s basketball games over the past, well I guess, thirtysomething years.

If they had a free night from ISU games, then I would see them taking in a basketball game at Rose-Hulman. I would also see them, all bundled up many times, at Terre Haute South baseball games.

Norma is a member of the Terre Haute Bowlers Hall of Fame class of 1982.

Marv will be missed.

On a happier note, Jay Scamihorn — who I’ve known since I worked at Imperial Lanes before I was on the ISU bowling team — has returned to bowling around the first of the year.

If you recall, Scamihorn had a tussle with a moving train in a car-train accident near Blackhawk back in August.

I ran into Jay in late 2008 at, where else, an ISU basketball game. He said then he was about ready to begin bowling again.

Sure enough, he’s back, and hasn’t missed a beat. He had high series the past week — see bowling league results — in the Monday and Wednesday senior leagues at the Bowling Center.

Welcome back Jay.

One of the hottest local bowlers in January was Chris Salyer.

On Jan. 6, Salyer bowled a 300 game (704 series) during the Monday Night Bush Mixed League at Vigo Bowl. Two weeks later on Jan. 19, he rolled another 300 game, this time with a three-game series of 820 (300-234-286).

That was his third career 300 game and first 800 series.
