Kegler's Korner: Hautean Breshears shines for Vincennes

By Dennis Clark

TERRE HAUTE — The Vincennes University men’s bowling team dominated in winning its 15th National Junior College Athletic Association championship in Buffalo, N.Y. last weekend.

The VU keglers dominated — dominated might not be a strong enough description — in record fashion with an 840-pin advantage over second place Mohawk Valley (N.Y.) Community College in the 14-team tournament.

“Obviously, we are very thrilled with the results,” Vincennes Hall of Fame coach Gary Sparks said.

Talk about dominating. Vincennes had secured the title heading into the last segment of the tournament and could have sat out the Baker events and still won by 300 pins.

Freshman Brett Shepherd was the all-events champion and earned the top spot on the All-American team, along with teammates, freshman Mikey Hill and sophomore Russ Mathes.

Shepherd and his doubles partner, sophomore Allen Breshears of Terre Haute, finished second in the national doubles event, earning silver medals. Proving its beneficial who you team up with, Shepherd recorded a 699 series, Breshears just 534, for a total of 1,233.

“One of the new experiences they had to learn to deal with was being the favorite and being expected to win, then still go out and perform,” said Sparks who was also named NJCAA Coach of the Year.

“I think they handled it quite well overall, after getting into the bowling and settling down to just do the job that we went there to do. One of our goals for the tournament was to win by a new record amount.”

The Trailblazers move up a level in competition this weekend, facing mostly four-year schools while competing in the Intercollegiate Bowling Championship Sectionals in Chattanooga, Tenn. If VU places in the top four teams, they would qualify for the IBC National Finals in Wichita, Kan. next month.

• Bunting, Purdue at IBC Sectionals too — Kara Bunting of Terre Haute is also competing in the IBC Sectionals in Chattanooga this weekend.

Bunting, a member of the Purdue women’s team, placed 15th overall in the Individual (singles) portion of the tournament on Friday. She had a six-game total of 1,103 for a 183.8 average.

The team event portion of the tournament is being competed Saturday and today.

• Senior moments — The 35th Indiana State Seniors Singles Championship Tournament is coming to Paradise Bowl in Clinton on April 5-20.

According to Greater Terre Haute Men’s Bowling Association President Gary Hiddle, a tournament highlight is a 101-year-old man (with a 150 average) and a 99-year-old woman bowling on April 16.

The tournament will have shifts at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. each day of the tournament. So, watch out for numerous cars that leave their left turn signal on approaching Clinton.

Just kidding … I’m old enough to bowl in this tournament.

• Men’s state tournament — The 98th Men’s State Championship Tournament is underway in Lafayette, with just a few local bowlers listed in the standings through March 11.
