Kegler's Korner: Mixed bag of Wabash Valley bowling news and observations

By Dennis Clark

TERRE HAUTE — Every once in a while, a sports columnist doesn’t possess a particular central theme to expound upon at length. This is the case in my situation this week.

So instead of two, three or maybe four lengthy topics, this will be a column devoted to short subjects, but certainly no less interesting.

Without further adieu, and definitely in no particular order, what follows is a random version of a mixed bag (mixed up?) of bowling news and observations:

• • •

• Vigo Bowl youth tournament on tap, actually No Tap, today — Unless you’re a late sleeper, it’s still not too late to sign up for Vigo Bowl’s Youth Singles No Tap Tournament at 11 a.m. today.

Cost is $10 with plaques being be awarded to the top five bowlers in each division. Divisions are “A” (boys 150-and-over average/girls 150-and-over average) and “B” (boys 149-and-under average/girls 149-and-under average).

A total of four games will be bowled, with the lowest score removed.

• Furry/Fury? — Men’s Association “manager” Tony Leturgez — I keep wanting to call him “secretary” — reported that Billy Furry shot his first 300 game and 800 three-game series in the Davison Service and Equipment League at Vigo Bowl on Jan. 24.

What was ironic was that the ball used by Furry was a “Brunswick Twisted Fury”.

• High school regional report — The Terre Haute South boys team finished fourth at the Evansville regional in high school tournament action last weekend.

South was seeded third after a three-game score of 2,846, but in the stepladder finals, the Braves fell to Mount Vernon 498-423. Jasper was top seed and eventual regional champion.

In the girls individual competition, Chelsea Maloney of South Vermillion finished eighth with a three-game score of 531.

• Vigo Bowl Mixed Shootout next weekend — Vigo Bowl will host the Mixed Team Shootout at 11 a.m. on Feb. 24. Sign up as man/woman couples which will be placed in A or B divisions by average.

Teams will be formed by a blind draw, teaming up one couple from A division with a couple from B division. Cost is $50 per couple with five games being bowled. Drawing for teams will be 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 23. Deadline to enter is Feb. 22.

• THBC introduces Shuffle Bowl — The Terre Haute Bowling Center is putting on the Mic’s Pics Shuffle Bowl at 7 p.m. on Mar. 22. This is a Mixed Doubles Tournament that the THBC claims “you will never again see mixed doubles as mixed up as this.”

Cost is $30 per couple with 1-man, 1-woman teams bowling four games. Walk-ins are welcome. First prize is $300.

• VFW state tournament — The VFW State Bowling Tournament will be at Vigo Bowl over the weekends of April 19-20 and 26-27. Team event will be on the Saturdays, singles and doubles on the Sundays.

The tournament host is Lawton-Byrum Post 972 in Terre Haute.

• Johnson sweeps up $500 — Scott Johnson won the $500 first prize in the Terre Haute Bowling Center 2nd Annual New Year’s Day Sweeper, naturally enough on Jan. 1.

Following Johnson in the top five were Clint Woods, Crystal Sullivan, Bob Lovvron and Brent Taylor. Johnson defeated Woods in the championship match, advancing from the No. 5 seed position.

Below are the top 20 six-game qualifying scores with total pinfall and average. The top five advanced to the stepladder finals:

1. Clint Woods 1,402 233; 2. Crystal Sullivan 1,397 232; 3. Bob Lovvron 1,391 231; 4. Brent Taylor 1,389 231; 5. Scott Johnson 1,385 230; 6. Dave Renshaw 1,379 229; 7. Tom Brown 1,379 229; 8. Bryan Barton 1,372 228; 9. Shane Mullenix 1,344 224; 10. John McWilliams 1,331 221; 11. Mark Guenzel 1,317 219; 12. Sean Pepper 1,316 219; 13. Todd Hart 1,314 219; 14. Scott Hill 1,311 218; 15. Harold Costello 1,310 218; 16. Tom Barr 1,309 218; 17. Brian McKenzie 1,297 216; 18. Brian Taylor 1,290 215; 19. Josh Snowden 1,270 211; 20. Austin Marsh 1,265 210.

• Bowling ringtones and rap music? — The Professional Bowlers Association offers ringtones featuring the voices of Denny’s PBA Tour stars as well as rap songs about PBA stars. Just visit www.pba.com/mobile.

The ringtones offered, at $2.99 a pop, include player rap tones for mobile phones performed by Archie Jones, who I understand performs rap songs for recent Denny’s PBA Tour telecasts on ESPN.

Fans can also download ringtones featuring “messages” from select PBA Tour stars including Norm Duke and Pete Weber. At least they end with the sound of pins falling.

But I couldn’t find a ringtone of my “favorite” bowling sound that still wakes me from a deep sleep occasionally, the sound of getting the 4-6-7-10 split. Better yet, what about that even more distinctive sound of chopping the 6-pin off the 6-10 spare?

Oh well, we’ll be back in a couple of weeks.
