Kegler's Korner: Mixed bag of Wabash Valley bowling news and observations

TERRE HAUTE — Every once in a while, a sports columnist doesn’t possess a particular central theme to expound upon at length. This is the case in my situation this week.

So instead of two, three or maybe four lengthy topics, this will be a column devoted to short subjects, but certainly no less interesting.

Without further adieu, and definitely in no particular order, what follows is a random version of a mixed bag (mixed up?) of bowling news and observations:

• • •

• Vigo Bowl youth tournament on tap, actually No Tap, today — Unless you’re a late sleeper, it’s still not too late to sign up for Vigo Bowl’s Youth Singles No Tap Tournament at 11 a.m. today.

Cost is $10 with plaques being be awarded to the top five bowlers in each division. Divisions are “A” (boys 150-and-over average/girls 150-and-over average) and “B” (boys 149-and-under average/girls 149-and-under average).

A total of four games will be bowled, with the lowest score removed.

• Furry/Fury? — Men’s Association “manager” Tony Leturgez — I keep wanting to call him “secretary” — reported that Billy Furry shot his first 300 game and 800 three-game series in the Davison Service and Equipment League at Vigo Bowl on Jan. 24.

What was ironic was that the ball used by Furry was a “Brunswick Twisted Fury”.

• High school regional report — The Terre Haute South boys team finished fourth at the Evansville regional in high school tournament action last weekend.

South was seeded third after a three-game score of 2,846, but in the stepladder finals, the Braves fell to Mount Vernon 498-423. Jasper was top seed and eventual regional champion.

In the girls individual competition, Chelsea Maloney of South Vermillion finished eighth with a three-game score of 531.

• Vigo Bowl Mixed Shootout next weekend — Vigo Bowl will host the Mixed Team Shootout at 11 a.m. on Feb. 24. Sign up as man/woman couples which will be placed in A or B divisions by average.
