Kegler's Korner: South grad 13th in NCAA bowling rankings

TERRE HAUTE — There has been no indication of a sophomore jinx involving Purdue University sophomore Kara Bunting, a former Terre Haute South standout bowler.

According to the individual rankings of Collegebowling.com, Bunting is ranked 13th in the nation for college bowlers with at least 30 games of competition. Bunting is averaging 191.05 in 52 games covering seven events thus far this season with the Boilermakers.

As a team, the Purdue women’s squad in ranked No. 5 nationally.

Bunting, the Indiana high school state singles champion in 2004, has finished first, second, third and fourth in her best four tournament appearances this season.

The following are Bunting’s individual performances, along with the ranking of her Purdue team thus far this season:



Oct. 6-7 — Hammer Midwest Collegiate, Wauwatosa, Wis.. (Bunting fourth individually with a 195.22 average, Purdue team second in event).

Oct. 20-21 — Orange and Black Classic, Beaver Creek, Ohio (Bunting 15th individually with a 191.50 average, Purdue team fourth in event).

Oct. 27-28 — Illinois State BPA Collegiate, Freeport, Ill. (Bunting second individually with a 200.33 average, Purdue team second in event).

Nov. 3-4 — Boilermaker Classic, West Lafayette (Bunting first individually with a 198.40 average, Purdue team fourth in event).

Nov. 23-24 — National Team Match Games, Saint Louis, Mo. (Bunting 43rd individually with a 174.67 average, Purdue team eighth in event).

Dec. 27-28 — Keystone Quaker Classic, Allentown, Pa. (Bunting 39th individually with a 168.00 average, Purdue team second in event).

Dec. 29-30 — Nittany Lion Kegler Classic, Stratford, N.J. (Bunting third individually with a 202.33 average, Purdue team third in event).

• Breshears update — Allen Breshears continues to enjoy a successful sophomore campaign as well for the Vincennes University men’s team.

Breshears averaged 210 recently at the Keystone Quaker Classic in Allentown, Pa. on Dec. 27-28. The former Terre Haute North standout is averaging 191.143 through 42 games this season.

Breshears’ Vincennes University men’s team is currently ranked No. 11 nationally in the same Collegebowling.com poll.
