Kegler's Korner: Many high scores rolled on lanes this year

By Dennis Clark
The Tribune-Star

TERRE HAUTE Who is the best bowler in Terre Haute?

Without a definitive, specific tournament, one must turn to the Greater Terre Haute Bowling Association 2006-07 bowlers yearbook. This annual volume, worked up by Association Manager Tony Leturgez, is chock full of information.

In the 2006-07 numbers, did you know that there were 18 bowlers rolling an 800-or-higher series? Best last season was Scott Johnson with an 858 three-game series on Feb. 14, 2007. That ranks third all-time in the area, trailing only Ryan Nichols (859) and Chris Drake (859).

A total of 75 perfect 300 games were recorded last season, down a bit from the 91 in the 2005-06 season. Just missing perfect games were 59 299 games, while a dozen 298 games were rolled as well.

But who is the best individual bowler, what would be the top five-person team be?

Figuring a 210 average was a good cutoff to get possibly a pool of a dozen bowlers at each of the local bowling facilities, I was amazed to discover well over 30 bowlers qualified under that standard at Vigo Bowl (41), Terre Haute Bowling Center (35) and Imperial Lanes (39).

Also cracking the 210-plateau were bowlers at the John Curry Lanes, Elks (2), Brazilian Lanes (7) and Lucky Strike, Clinton (1).

A total of six talented area bowlers averaged 230-or-higher in a league last season.

So without further adieu, let’s honor these high scorers with an all-area first team — taken from the entire men’s association:

While on the subject of the GTH Men’s Bowling Association, officers for 2007-08 are President Gary Hiddle, Vice-president Kevin Bye, Association Manager Tony Leturgez and Treasurer Mike Zebrowski.

Directors include Dave Edrington, Matt Engle, Ernie Larrison, Chris Drake, David Fields, J.C. Dressler, Dave Elder, Bob Acree and Harold Maxwell.

Julie Salyer e-mailed us an addition following last week’s column which featured a lengthy list of several high scorers in the Terre Haute area so far this season.

Her son, Chris Salyer, rolled his first 300 game Nov. 19 in the Monday Night Mixed Bush League at Vigo Bowl. This is Chris’ first year bowling as an adult after lighting up the lanes as a junior competitor. He started bowling in 2002.

Parker Bohn III, now 44 years old, proved he is still a force to be reckoned with on the Denny’s Professional Bowlers Association tour.

Bohn III, a veteran left-handed bowler, won his 31st career title, defeating arguably the future of pro bowling left-handers, 24-year-old Rhino Page. Bohn won an thrilling and emotional championship match, 267-247, in the ESPN-televised finals of the Spartanburg (S.C.) Classic last Sunday.

Bohn started the match with six consecutive strikes for an early lead, then Page rallied with six straight strikes of his own later in the match. But Bohn’s experience — 103 TV appearances vs. just two TV appearances for Page — won out in the end.

Bohn’s triumph puts him three titles shy of Mark Roth and Pete Weber for third all-time. His last win was in the El Paso Classic nearly three years ago, entering last week winless in his last 10 championship rounds.

Page is a non-exempt bowler, advancing through the PBA Tour Qualifying Round six times in seven tries and last Sunday became the first bowler to advance to two championship rounds after qualifying through the TQR.

“I told Rhino this summer, ‘you’re a young gun and there’s no way you shouldn’t be on Tour,’” Bohn said. “He’s perked up everyone’s ears and shown that he’s a great player and he’s here to stay. He didn’t back down at all today. Fortunately for me I bowled my best game in the title match. But I guarantee he will be back.”

The PBA Tour takes a two-week break for the holidays before returning with the ConstructionJobs.com Championship on Jan. 2-6 at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev. The live ESPN-televised finals will be Jan. 6 at 1 p.m. EST.

Just like the PBA tour, Kegler’s Korner will be on a two-week hiatus during the holidays. This is a request to all bowling officials to please make a New Year’s resolution to send this columnist any bowling information, scores, tournament results, etc.

It would be greatly appreciated.

See you again in 2008.
