Hall of Fame banquet lands well known speaker

The 39th Greater Terre Haute Bowlers Hall of Fame banquet is set for 6:30 p.m. on May 5 at Le Fer Hall on the campus of St. Mary-of-the-Woods College.

Guest speaker will be Dick Jonckowski, a much sought after guest speaker and master of ceremonies for a wide range of events, both regional and national, since 1965.

Jonckowski has been the public address voice of University of Minnesota baseball and basketball since 1986. He has also served as the banquet MC and game PA voice for the American Legion World Series since 1998.

His motto being “Laugh and Live Longer,” Jonckowski has entertained thousands all over the United States and Canada with his spontaneity and quick wit.

John Hayes, one of the Hall of Fame’s board of governors, has known Jonckowski for the past 10 years during his time as manager of the Wayne Newton Post 346 American Legion baseball team.

Cost is $20 per person and tickets will be available at the Terre Haute Bowling Center, Vigo Bowl, Imperial Lanes, Brazilian Lanes and through the Great Terre Haute Men’s and Women’s Bowling Associations.



In tournament news:

• Women’s local tournament — The Greater Terre Haute Women’s USBC Local Tournament final results were posted recently, this year’s annual event was Paradise Bowl in Clinton.

In team event, The Fab Five (3,389) was first, Russell Enterprizes (3,389) second while third place went to Five Wonders (3,274).

In doubles, first place was Linda Zellars-Carol Davis (1,450), followed by Alice Hines-Therese Raines (1,443), Brittany Gambill-Brittany Foster (1,436), Mary L. Williams-Sarah Tharp (1,377) and Jodi Wheeler-Sue Chandler (1,359).

In singles, Sandy Peters (735) was the winner, followed by Davis (718), Williams (701), Hines (699), Chandler (691), Fonda Nesbit (679) and Linda Campbell (675).

All events actual champion was Foster with a nine-game tally of 1,982 a 220.2 average. In all events handicap, the top six were Davis (2,137), Foster (2,135), Campbell (2,019), Hines (2,017), Chandler (2,013) and Tharp (2,004).

• Men’s local tournament — The Greater Terre Haute Men’s Association local tournament is set for the weekend — only one weekend this year — of March 15-16. Team event is set for Vigo Bowl, doubles/singles at Brazilian Lanes.

• Breshears, VU in national tournament — Sophomore Allen Breshears, a graduate of Terre Haute North, will be competing with his Vincennes University men’s team at the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament in Buffalo, N.Y. on Friday and Saturday.

The Blazers have won the NJCAA championship 14 times, finishing runner-up in last year’s tournament.

• Super Bowl VI — The team of Bill Alumbaugh III, Scott Johansen, Mandy Wilkins, Brent Hoopingarner and Jared Norris was the winner of Imperial Lanes’ Super Bowl VI tournament on, you guessed it, Super Bowl Sunday.

Second place went to the team of Tom Hays, Troy Williams, Jim Sullivan, Tony Leturgez and Anya Fisher.

Top individuals were Tom Hays (men, 242 average) and Crystal Sullivan (women, 231 average).

• March Madness — Imperial Lanes will be celebrating college basketball’s much-ballyhooed event with their own bowling version of March Madness.

On three straight Tuesday nights — March 11, 18 and 25 — beginning at about 9:30 p.m., 64 bowlers will compete in a similar one-and-done format (each round is best two-of-three match games).

On March 11, one round will cut the field to 32. On March 18, survivors return for the second and third rounds, slicing the field to 16 then 8. On March 25, the remaining survivors come back to play out the final three rounds to determine the champion.

• Youth tourney — Vigo Bowl is hosting a youth singles no tap tournament at 11 a.m. next Sunday. Cost is $10, with three divisions apiece for boys and girls based on average.

• PBA Tour update —The PBA Tour has been in Columbus, Ohio with today’s televised finals at 12:30 p.m. on ESPN. The four finalists are Chris Barnes, Mika Koivuniemi, Kevin Simard and Wes Malott.

Incidentally, Malott bested Kelly Kulick, one of the top pro women bowlers, 4-games-to-3 in the round of eight on Friday night.

• PBA Women’s Series — Carolyn Dorin-Ballard claimed top spot in points (82.997), earnings ($25,000) and average (225.75) for the four-tournament 2007 PBA Women’s Series.

The Women’s Series will be brought back in 2008, with hopes for an expanded schedule.

• Duke wins in Indy —Norm Duke captured his third career Major title, defeating Ryan Shafer, 202-165, last Sunday to win the Denny’s World Championship at Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis.

Proving age can be desirable in bowling, Duke’s win at the age of 43, was the sixth time in the last eight years a bowler 40-years-or-older captured the PBA World Championship.

• Tully perfect — Speaking of getting better with age, I understand Dick Tully bowled a perfect 300 game and 816 series in the Guarantee Roofing League on Wednesday at the Terre Haute Bowling Center.
