Indiana State women lose starter Jessica Valley to torn ACL

TERRE HAUTE — In an unfortunate deja vu scenario, Indiana State women’s basketball will be without sophomore guard Jessica Valley for the remainder of the season.

The Sycamore coaching staff’s fears were confirmed Wednesday evening in Hulman Center with a text message from Valley to coach Teri Moren that she had torn the ACL in the same right knee that she tore roughly 360 days ago.

Valley fought hard in the offseason to be ready to contribute for the Sycamores and earned a starting role. The 5-foot-9 sophomore started 16 of the 17 games she was available for this season and was second on the team with an average of 6.6 rebounds.

Valley had a career-high 12 rebounds twice this season and was grabbing 7.7 per game during Missouri Valley Conference play. Valley suffered the injury last Wednesday in practice.

“She’ll have surgery on Friday. Believe it or not, her range of motion is good, her strength is good and she had very little swelling, unlike the first one,” ISU coach Teri Moren said.

The Sycamores played without Valley last Friday at Illinois State, and 6-2 freshman Marina Laramie stepped in admirably with 17 points and nine rebounds.

“What we saw was Marina step up against Illinois State, put up some really good numbers. We’re going to need her to continue to grow as a player,” Moren said. “We really challenged her to rebound. That’s the thing we felt like we were losing [most] with Valley [out].”
