Metro roundup: Matchett repeats at Idle Creek

TERRE HAUTE — Ashley Matchett was one of the winners in golf competition concluded Sunday or Monday in Vigo County.

Matchett is the Idle Creek club champion for the second year in a row. He had rounds of 72 and 68 to finish with a 4-under-par 140 score to win.

Trent Carr took second, going 75-77 for 152, while Mike Weir was first in the net division with 132.

Denise Rowlett took women’s honors and Dave Rowlett is the senior champ.

• At Rea Park, the winning foursome in the Old Man Scramble took top honors with 29-under-par 115.

Abe Nasser, Dave Patterson, Jim Horrall and Steve Schroeder made up the winning team. The second-place foursome finished a shot back at 116.

• At Hulman Links, two teams finished with 16-under-par 128 scores to tie for low score in Mundy’s Game concluded Monday.

Dave Monroney and Geoff Shuck and Tom Jones and Ed Grayless tied for low score of 128 in the two-day event. Jones and Grayless also tied for low total of 64 in Monday’s round.

Travis Turpen and Chris Pearson took third with 129 and tied for low score on the back in the first round.

Volleyball

• Two Sycamores honored
— Senior outside hitter Morgan Dall and sophomore middle blocker Cassandra Willis of Indiana State were named to the SIUE Cougar Classic all-tournament team.

Dall had 25 kills and 16 digs in two matches, while Willis had 21 kills, seven blocks and led the team with a .381 hitting percentage.

ISU finished 1-1 in the tournament, beating the host team in five sets but losing to Akron in five. The Sycamores play today at Chicago State.

• Godfreys lead
— At Sullivan, Jim Godfrey nipped Steve Godfrey by two-tenths of a second to win the Sullivan Beta Club’s Labor Day mile run.

Heidi Norris was top female in the race, which included 210 participants.

Auto racing

• Urish a winner
— At DuQuoin, Ill., Chris Urish took advantage of problems by others to win the Ted Horn 100 run Sunday night at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds.

Robert Ballou led the first 80 laps, then Chris Windom led 81 through 97 until he and Shane Cockrum, running second, had problems.

Urish was in third but inherited the lead and led the final four turns to win. Ballou was fifth and Windom seventh.

Ballou was fifth at the finish but was dropped to 15th for failure to pass post-race inspection.

Bobby East was second and assumed first place in the Silver Crown point totals going into the final race, leading Jerry Coons Jr. by five.
