Sycamores induct five into ISU Athletics Hall of Fame

TERRE HAUTE — Five men officially became members of the Indiana State University Athletics Hall of Fame on Thursday in a dinner in Hulman Memorial Student Union.

Members of the 22nd class are Bob Dickman, Dan Brandenburg, Dr. Richard G. Landini, Dr. Bob Pychinka, and Ernest Zeller, the latter two inducted posthumously in the ceremony sponsored by Old National Bank.

Dickman competed in wrestling from 1979 to 1983 and earned All-America honors, qualifying for the NCAA championships three times and twice losing to the eventual champ at 118 pounds.

He holds the school record in career takedowns (985), season takedowns (250), match takedowns (11) and most points in a match (30).

“Oh, to be young again,” he said in his acceptance remarks.

He said he has worked in various capacities in adult correction systems for more than 20 years, mainly in Wisconsin. “I am temporarily retired,” he said.

Dickman joins Bruce Baumgartner, Jack Effner and coach Fran McCann in the Hall of Fame. McCann was at the dinner while Effner was unable to attend after undergoing surgery.

Brandenburg played football and earned NCAA Division I-AA All-America football honors, playing defensive end. He holds the single-season record for sacks with 13 and is fourth on the ISU career list in sacks. He had 66 tackles two seasons and was drafted in the seventh round of the National Football League by the Buffalo Bills.

Brandenburg was a quarterback in high school, played basketball and was a high jumper in track. “My dad was a football coach and he brought a program back from a clinic at Indiana State. I knew that was where I wanted to go,” he recalled.

Brandenburg played four years with the Bills and one year with Philadelphia.

He now lives in San Diego, Calif. “I work with athletes getting ready for the [NFL] Combine and coach high school football,” he said. Several members of his family and friends were on hand for the dinner including fellow ISU grads Robert and Anita Morris.

Landini was president of the university during one of its most successful periods in athletics. The men’s basketball team lost only to Michigan State in the final game of the 1979 NCAA Basketball Championships in a game that was watched by a record television audience.

The baseball team competed in the 1986 College World Series, the only time an ISU team has been in that event.

The football team competed as an NCAA I-AA member and was ranked No. 1 much of the 1984 season.

ISU teams won 16 conference championships in his tenure (1975-1992) and qualified for 11 NCAA tournaments.

Dr. Landini died in 2004. Barbara Landini, his wife, accepted the award.

Pychinka earned six letters in football and wrestling from 1963 to 1967, being captain of the football team twice and of the wrestling team. He was all-conference in football and was a Big State champ in wrestling three times.

He won the McMillan Award in 1965 and was named ISU Athlete of the Year in 1967.

Pychinka later was on the football coaching staff, serving under Jerry Huntman and Tom Harp. He earned his doctorate at ISU.

He said he was recruited by wrestling coach Chuck Sanders. “Bill Jones was my first football coach,” he said and recalled classes taught by Dr. Bob McDavid and Tom Pitts.

“Jerry Huntsman instilled important values in the players. If you never quit, you never lose,” said Pychinka.

He was a teacher and coach at Indianapolis Cathedral and Rushville high schools and was administrator at Triton Central.

Zeller competed in football and wrestling from 1930 to 1933 and was the first matman to earn All-America honors, taking third place in the nationals. He played football four years and received the Bigwood Award in football.

He played in the Canadian Football League and was on the coaching staff at Toronto one season.

He taught and coached at Robinson High School in Illinois, was principal at Mill Creek High School in LaPorte County and was superintendent of Butler Township Schools in DeKalb County.

Zeller died July 1, 1987.

As its 21st-place ranking in unofficial NCAA baseball RPI lists attest, Indiana State’s baseball team has done a lot right this season.
It’s been a surprising season, but one thing the Sycamores haven’t done is to put together a big early lead and ride out the wave.
On Tuesday against struggling Purdue, ISU finally added an early big inning to its list of accomplishments.

Indiana State’s pitchers weren’t their best in Friday’s series opener against Illinois State, but it seemed the Sycamores might get away with it. Through seven innings, ISU had issued six walks, gave up six hits and hit a batter, but still trailed by just a run. But ISU’s luck with its generosity would give out in the eighth, and even if it hadn’t, Illinois State standout starter Dan Savas had the Sycamores’ bats in a deep freeze anyway.
