ISU women romp over Drake

DES MOINES, Iowa — You can’t win if you can’t score. Indiana State’s women’s basketball team drove that lesson home to Drake on Friday night.

Drake had just one field goal for a near-18-minute stretch in the first half during ISU’s first Missouri Valley Conference road trip of the season. ISU’s clampdown defense carried the Sycamores to a 67-49 victory at the Knapp Center.

It was ISU’s first victory at Drake since the 2006-07 season. ISU (10-4 overall) improved to 2-1 in the MVC.

Rachel Mahan led ISU with 23 points and Taylor Whitley had 20 points. Jessica Valley had 12 rebounds. Whitley’s 20 points were a career-high. Mahan’s 23 points and Valley’s 12 rebounds tied career-highs.

Drake scored two buckets in quick succession to start the game, but from the 18:42 to the 7:07 mark, the Bulldogs did not score a field goal. Drake then had another drought from the field, failing to score until there were 50 seconds left in the half.

By then, ISU had built a 33-18 lead and the Sycamores never looked back.

Kyndal Clark led the Bulldogs (5-9, 0-3) with 13 points. Carly Grenfell had 11.

ISU’s road trip continues at Creighton on Sunday.
