Bulldogs final ISU women’s nonleague foe

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana State women’s basketball team will close out its nonconference schedule today, traveling to Indianapolis’ Hinkle Fieldhouse for an in-state matchup against Butler.

The 5 p.m. contest between the Sycamores and Bulldogs will follow a Butler men’s basketball game against Evansville.

The ISU-Butler game can be heard live on WPRS-AM 1440 and on the Nelligan Sports Marketing Radio Network.

Indiana State will enter with an 8-2 overall record and a six-game winning streak, coming off a 69-35 victory over Chicago State on Tuesday in Hulman Center. Freshman Marina Laramie led four Sycamores in double figures, posting a career-high 15 points.

Entering the weekend, ISU’s six-game streak is tied for 17th-longest active winning streak in the nation.

Today’s game will be the 25th meeting between Indiana State and Butler, with the all-time series sitting even at 12-12. ISU and BU met last season in Terre Haute, with the Sycamores picking up a 49-46 victory Dec. 6, 2011. Despite the Bulldogs winning 10 of the last 14 meetings since the 1989-90 season, the Sycamores have won two out of the last three matchups inside Hinkle Fieldhouse (wins in 2002-03 and 2008-09).

Butler enters today’s clash with at 6-5, carrying a three-game winning streak after defeating Indiana at home (59-56) and earning road wins at Northern Kentucky (66-56) and IUPUI (67-58). The Bulldogs are 3-1 inside Hinkle Fieldhouse this season, holding their opponents to less than 60 points in each game. A trio of NCAA Division I transfers lead Butler this season, as Taylor Schippers (Oklahoma State, 16.6 points per game), Daress McClung (Cincinnati, 16.3 ppg) and Liz Stratman (Xavier, 14.0 ppg) each average in double figures. McClung also leads the team with 9.1 rebounds per outing, tying for 17th in the NCAA with five double-doubles this season.

After today, ISU has a 13-day break over the holiday season, returning to the court for their Missouri Valley Conference opener against Bradley on Friday, Jan. 4, in Hulman Center.
