Mahan’s 23 points lead ISU women over Bradley

PEORIA, Ill. — Four players scored in double figures to help Indiana State defeat host Bradley 80-67 in Missouri Valley Conference women’s basketball Friday evening in Renaissance Coliseum.

Junior forward Racheal Mahan led the Sycamores, scoring on the opening possession and not looking back as she finished with 23 points on 10-for-11 shooting from the field and 3-for-3 from the free-throw line. She also had four rebounds, three steals and a block as Indiana State shot 49.3 percent and dished out 20 assists.

ISU came out strong on the defensive end, holding Bradley scoreless for the first 5 minutes, 19 seconds. The Sycamores also won the rebounding battle 41-29, including 20 offensive boards.

Senior guard Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir tied a career high with eight assists and also scored 14 points. Senior guard Anna Munn led with a team-high eight boards to go along with 13 points and five assists.

For the evening, the Sycamores went 7 for 10 from the line, including perfect efforts from Munn, Abdul-Qaadir and Mahan.

Junior forward Chelsea Small came off the ISU bench to round out the double-figure scorers with 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Sycamores put together one of their strongest halves of basketball this season as it scored the second-most points in a half, taking a 47-29 lead into the break.

ISU was led by 14 first-half points from Mahan as it shot 57.9 percent in the opening frame. 

Junior forward Lashonda Littleton made her first career start as she pulled down seven rebounds and scored six points for the coach Teri Moren’s Sycamores.

Indiana State led by as many as 20 with 18:46 to play. But Bradley made a run in the second half, cutting its deficit to 11 at one point. A charge call on Bradley’s leading scorer Michelle Young took her out of the game with 8:55 left. Young ended up as the Braves’ leading scorer with 15 points.

ISU (12-7 overall, 7-1 MVC) continues road play Sunday at Loyola, with tipoff scheduled for 3 p.m. in Gentile Arena. Bradley is now 4-15 and 1-7 respectively.
