Free throws seal win for ISU women in 20-point comeback

‘Proud of kids … for fighting back,’ Moren says of 1-point win on road

Huntington, W.Va. — Two free throws by Lashonda Littleton with 1.7 seconds left Sunday enabled visiting Indiana State to overcome a deficit that was 20 points at one time and earn a 68-67 nonconference women’s basketball victory at Marshall.

“Down the stretch and when it mattered, our press was good to us,” coach Teri Moren said, “and I thought Lashonda did a great job for us and hit those free throws. I’m proud of the kids and give them all credit for fighting back.”

ISU trailed 39-23 at halftime but outscored the Thundering Herd 45-28 in the second half, using a 16-0 run to get within four points with 4:04 left in the game.

Marshall built its lead back to seven points, but Marina Laramie, Natasha Zurek, Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir and Anna Munn combined for six free throws as ISU to creep closer.

Littleton had a pair of crucial offensive boards and the Herd missed both ends of a double-bonus free throw opportunity in the final minute. Littleton’s final offensive rebound set up her tying and winning points.

Munn became the 27th player in the history of the ISU women’s program to score 1,000 points.

That came on a free throw late in the first half.

Senior guard Abdul-Qaadir led the winning effort with 17 points while Munn and Laramie had 13 each and Littleton 12. Laramie had a career-high 14 rebounds and Littleton grabbed 10.

ISU led early in the game and was up 18-17 before Marshall went on an 11-0 run that set the tone for the rest of the first half. The Herd shot 50 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes, their visitors just 24 percent. ISU had a 40-36 rebound advantage for the game.

“The one thing that stood out to me at halftime was those rebounds and I told them that teams who outrebound their opponent usually win the game,” Moren added. “I’m glad that statistic has stuck through in this victory.”
