Indiana State women’s soccer team advances to MVC championship

EVANSVILLE — The Indiana State women’s soccer team used two goals in each half to overcome No. 6 seed Drake for a 4-0 triumph in the Missouri Valley Conference tournament semifinals Friday evening at Black Beauty Field.

With the victory, ISU qualified for the tourney championship game for the second straight year and will face the winner of the No. 1 Illinois State/No. 5 seed Evansville game at 1:06 p.m. Sunday.

The Sycamores (10-8) got two quick goals in the first half from Abby and Taylor Reed just a 63 seconds apart, while goals by sophomore midfielder Kate Johnson and senior midfielder Taylor Hancock in the second half helped seal the win.

The game got off to a quick start as Drake (3-12-5) threatened early, but ISU freshman goalkeeper Brittany San Roman came up with a save in the second minute. San Roman, an MVC All-Freshman team pick turned in a solid performance between the pipes as she recorded five saves on 11 shots and posted her fifth shutout of the season.

ISU led with 22 shots, including 15 shots on goal for the most in both categories this season in a single game. The Sycamores also led in corners (5-2). The win ties the longest winning streak in school history, coming to a total of six heading into Sunday’s championship showdown.

Senior midfielder Taylor Reed scored first on a shot 15 yards from the middle of the box near the left post that found the back of the net in the 30th minute. It marked her third goal of the season.

Freshman forward and first-team All-MVC selection Abby Reed followed up off an assist by Johnson that came from the middle of the box. Reed slotted through the defense to finish with a goal in the far right corner of the net. Abby Reed continues to lead ISU in scoring with 10 goals and two assists for 22 points.

The Sycamores continued their domination into the second half with goals by Johnson and Hancock. First-team All-MVC pick Johnson scored uncontested in the 59th minute on a shot from 8 yards out, while Hancock struck less than three minutes later in the 62nd minute on an assist by freshman defender Kayla Welch.

The win solidifies that the Sycamores will have a winning season for the first time in program history. In addition, the 10 wins are the most for any Sycamore team in the 13-year history of the program.

Sunday’s championship game will be shown live on Fox Sports Midwest, Fox Sports Indiana, Fox Sports Kansas City (combined 5.9 million homes), Fox College Sports (56 million digital homes), ESPN3 (85 million unique households but outside the states of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas and Missouri), DirecTV (Channel 671), Dish Network (Channel 418) and AT&T U-Verse (Channel 748).
