VIDEO: Mahan's 17 rebounds among five best totals in league tournament history

Laramie also delivers double-double for ISU

ST. CHARLES, Mo. — The toughness — both mental and physical — of Marina Laramie and Racheal Mahan — is a big reason the Indiana State women’s basketball team won five games in a row to close the regular season.

The resolve of the Sycamore post duo was put to the test Friday in the MVC Tournament quarterfinals, and Laramie and Mahan were up to the task.

Mahan’s career-high 17-rebound performance was crucial in the Sycamores’ 61-52 victory over Loyola. Her rebounding effort tied the fifth best in the 29-year history of the MVC Tournament.

Mahan also plugged away for 25 minutes to make things difficult for Loyola’s Troy Hambric, a 19-point-per-game scorer.

Late in the game, Mahan had a series with an offensive-rebound basket that was followed by a steal from Hambric, who then knocked Mahan to The Family Arena court.

Mahan, a 55-percent free-throw shooter, knocked down two free throws then got a much-deserved rest.

“I feel like I worked hard for that break,” Mahan said. “Anna came up to me and said ‘Rach, hit these and you’re going to get a break.' I said, ‘I’m going to hit these.’ That was my reward for hitting those free throws.”

Laramie keyed the Sycamores' offense in the second half after getting her shot blocked multiple times in the first half. ISU's post players combined to go 4-of-15 from the field in a tough first half, but they perservered.

Laramie also had a double-double for the Sycamores, her fourth of the season and first since Jan. 12 against Illinois State. Laramie had seven offensive rebounds and three steals, both season highs.

“We talk about 50-50 balls all the time,” Moren said. “That’s about heart and determination. Which team wants it the worst? The one play that stands out the most is Red [Laramie] diving for that ball in the second half. Her getting on the floor is big. She’ll tell you that.”

Hustle plays like that one were regular occurrences for the Sycamores throughout this game.

Senior Anna Munn, who had eight rebounds to contribute to ISU’s 49-40 edge in that department, gave up her body to draw a charge in the final minutes.

ISU didn’t make a lot of shots, but made plays that winners make.

While Mahan shot just 3 of 13 from the field to score 10 points, she found open shooters, blocked three shots and had 13 of her rebounds in the second half.

Loyola coach Sheryl Swoopes was impressed with how Mahan played on the low block.

“She’s strong. It’s almost impossible to defend her one-on-one. Sometimes we were able to get the ball out of her hands. Their post players were big for them today,” Swoopes said.

Hambric keyed nearly every Loyola run that kept the Ramblers close, but ISU forced her into some tough shots and six turnovers.

“Their posts, they were in a little foul trouble, but they did a pretty good job not making silly fouls and staying low on drives,” Hambric said. “They made it difficult to catch the ball at times.”

Ultimately, it was the type of game that Mahan and Laramie thrive in.

“Our post players in particular, really got it done on the defensive end and with their rebounding. I thought they played special today,” Moren said. “We struggled but grinded it out, which is what you have to do.”

Indiana State’s men’s basketball program recruited Tre Bennett to be its next starting point guard. Indiana State does not want to put too much pressure on Bennett in his first season.
Those two sentences seem to be a contradiction. But ISU’s coaches and Bennett himself are hoping there’s a third way, a path where he can ease into a role as a contributor without the pressure, at least right off the bat, of being “the man.”
