ISU volleyball improves to 7-6 with home win against Chicago State

TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State’s volleyball team survived a poor performance in the opening game to defeat the Chicago State Cougars 3-1 (15-25, 25-18, 25-16, 26-16) in the ISU Arena on Tuesday.

The Sycamores (7-6) will take a 1-1 Missouri Valley Conference record to Illinois State on Friday. Chicago State fell to 2-12 for the season.

Morgan Dall led Indiana State with 21 kills, while Kyla Thomas added 15, Victoria Swigart nine and Cassandra Willis eight. Loni Mackinson had 47 assists with Molly Murphy recording 22 digs. Kyla Thomas and Kynedi Nalls had four blocks each.

The Sycamores found themselves in a deep hole early in the opening game as Chicago State rolled to a 6-0 advantage. The Cougars held on from there to take the Game 1.

The teams went point for point early in the second game and were tied at 12 when the Sycamores began to take control. A pair of kills by Victoria Swigart put ISU up for good. Swigart added another and Kyla Thomas one as Indiana State began to pull away. Kynedi Nalls scored the game-winning point.

ISU broke away from a 5-all tie early in Game 3 on two Kyla Thomas kills and one from Morgan Dall. Chicago State rallied but could not gain the advantage as Indiana State used a 6-0 to take control and win the third game.

The fourth game began just the same as the third, but the Sycamores were able to pull away on kills on Morgan Dall and Cassandra Willis for an 11-9 advantage. Indiana State kept the pressure on to take the fourth and final game.
