TERRE HAUTE —
Indiana State freshman right-hander Ryan Keaffaber was named the Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced today.
Indiana State had outstanding work from each of its starters during four games in Florida last weekend and Keaffaber picked up a pair of saves as Indiana State won three of four games in the Snowbird Classic.
The freshman made three appearances during the weekend, working a total of four innings, and did not allow a base runner in any of his appearances. He was instrumental in the Sycamore victories over Ohio State and Connecticut, working the final 1 2/3 innings to earn the save against a threatening Connecticut team and setting the Buckeyes down in order in the ninth on Sunday.
Indiana State posted two wins (7-3 and 8-6) over an Ohio State team that was picked to finish third in the Big Ten this season and also recorded a 3-0 shutout over a Connecticut team that was picked to tie for second in The American Conference and competed in the NCAA tournament a year ago.
Pitching was a question mark for the Sycamores entering the season, with three starters who did not have a previous collegiate start. Two of the three notched their first collegiate wins.
The Sycamores continue their road show this coming weekend as they visit the Nashville area for games against Lipscomb, Belmont and Middle Tennessee State.
