Wierzba joins ISU women’s coaching staff

TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State women’s basketball coach Teri Moren announced the addition of Rhet Wierzba to her coaching staff Tuesday. Wierzba comes to Indiana State after spending the last three seasons with Mercer University in Georgia.

“We are thrilled to welcome Rhet to our Sycamore Family,” Moren said. “Rhet brings both experience and great basketball knowledge to Indiana State. I am excited to have someone with his energy, work ethic and desire to excel to join our program. He will be instrumental as we continue to build a championship program.”

Wierzba assisted the Bears in turning their women’s basketball program around over the past three seasons, as Mercer improved from eight combined wins from 2010-12 to a 20-12 overall record in 2012-13 and a trip to the postseason for the first time since 1984-85 with their appearance in the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI) last season.

Wierzba also made coaching stops at Austin Peay (2004-05), Evansville (2005-07) and Maryland (2007-10) following a four-year career on the court at Austin Peay. The Governors won back-to-back Ohio Valley Conference titles while he was in uniform in 2002-03 and 2003-04. Wierzba went on to play professionally in Mexico and Canada before deciding to join the coaching ranks at his alma mater.

A native of Farmington, Ill., Wierzba joins Moren’s staff in welcoming 10 newcomers to a women’s basketball roster that won 18 games and made an appearance in the Postseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament in 2012-13.

  • ISU takes balanced approach with newcomer Tre Bennett

Indiana State’s men’s basketball program recruited Tre Bennett to be its next starting point guard. Indiana State does not want to put too much pressure on Bennett in his first season.
Those two sentences seem to be a contradiction. But ISU’s coaches and Bennett himself are hoping there’s a third way, a path where he can ease into a role as a contributor without the pressure, at least right off the bat, of being “the man.”
