Metro roundup: ISU baseball picked seventh in Missouri Valley

TERRE HAUTE — The Indiana State baseball team will open its 2014 season in just over two

weeks and the Missouri Valley Conference coaches have picked the Sycamores

to finish seventh in the league race this season according to the MVC

Preseason Poll released today.

The chase for the 2014 MVC regular season championship is expected to come

down to a showdown between Wichita State and Missouri State. Only one point

separated the two Valley schools in the preseason poll, with Wichita State

tabbed the preseason favorite with 56 points and six first place votes.

Missouri State is second with 55 points and two first place votes.

Another close battle is expected for third and fourth in the league regular

season as defending regular season champion Illinois State received 46

points for third and new conference member Dallas Baptist received 44 points

for fourth. They are followed by Southern Illinois fifth with 28 points,

Evansville sixth with 25 points, Indiana State seventh with 23 points, and

Bradley eighth with 11 points.

³Pitching is our biggest question mark,² first-year coach Mitch Hannahs

said. ³We lost our three starters and return talent but they will have to be

developed as the season progresses. We may take our lumps early but I am

hopeful that we can build to a good finish at the end of the season.²

With only four starting position players returning and questions surrounding

the starting pitchers, the Sycamores did not have a player selected to the

preseason All-Conference team.

The Sycamores will open their 2014 season by travelling to Port Charlotte,

Fla., for the Snowbird Classic where they will play Auburn on Feb. 14,

Connecticut and Ohio State on Feb. 15, and Ohio State again on Feb. 16.

Indiana State will be hosting the conference tournament this season which

his scheduled for May 22-26 at Bob Warn Field.
