Metro: Punter, keeper are honored Engineers

TERRE HAUTE — Rose-Hulman punter Eric Schaible and women’s soccer goalkeeper Lucinda Combs have been named Exchange Club of Terre Haute Players of the Week.

Schaible averaged 40.6 yards on eight punts in Saturday’s 23-19 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference win ove Defiance, including a 61-yard kick and another punt downed at the 1-yard line.

Combs had 20 saves and a pair of shutouts as the Engineers went 1-0-1 last week, defeating Fontbonne 1-0 and tying regional power Centre. Her 13 saves against Centre included six against her twin sister Alex.


• Rose men third — At Franklin, the Rose-Hulman men’s team finished third Monday at the Franklin Invitational played at the Legends of Indiana.

Mount St. Joseph, ranked second in the nation, won with a score of 601, while Millikin shot 608 and the Engineers 614.

Cross country

• ISU men move up — Indiana State’s men moved up one spot to ninth place in the Great Lakes Region ranked released Monday by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

The Sycamores moved ahead of Miami of Ohio after a third-place finish on Friday at the Indiana Intercollegiates.

Indiana State competes Oct. 4 at the Notre Dame Invitational.


• Centre 1, Rose-Hulman 0 — At Danville, Ky., a goal in the second overtime handed the Rose-Hulman men their first loss in the past three games Sunday night.

Now 3-2-2, the Rose-Hulman men host Illinois College at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Centre is 4-1-2.
