TERRE HAUTE —
Indiana State’s men’s cross country team is ranked 10th in the Great Lakes Region in polls released Monday by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Defending champion Wisconsin is ranked first, with Indiana, Notre Dame, Michigan and Michigan State completing the top five. ISU finished 10th a year ago after beginning the season ranked 12th.
Transfer Jimmy Charles and freshmen David Timlin, Levi Taylor, Michael Passmore and Daniel Swem were impressive in a team performance trial last week and should complement the returnees nicely.
“The rankings reflect the positions of the finishers from a year ago,” said coach John McNichols. “Once the season starts we’ll be looking to chip away at the teams in front of us, and we have a great schedule that pairs us against four teams in front of us in our first couple of meets.”
In the Midwest Region, four Missouri Valley Conference schools are ranked — Southern Illinois ninth, Loyola of Chicago 10th, Wichita State 14th and Drake 15th.
ISU’s women begin the season unranked after placing 21st in the region last season. The Great Lakes rankings are led by Michigan State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Butler and Toledo while MVC schools ranked in the Midwest are Illinois State in 7th, Loyola 11th, Southern Illinois 12th and Bradley 14th.
ISU competes at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Evansville Mid-American Opener.
