Indiana House collecting most of boycott fines

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana House has collected most of the roughly $3,000 in fines that most Democratic members faced for their five-week boycott during this year’s session.

House records show that more than $100,000 has been collected from the 39 Democrats whose boycott blocked any legislative action. The Journal Gazette of Fort Wayne reports that only about $12,000 remains uncollected.

Most has been collected through deductions from the legislators’ expense checks, while some have directly paid their fines.

Republican House Speaker Brian Bosma says the money will go into the House budget and if it is unspent at the end of the fiscal year, it will be returned to the state’s general fund.
