Indiana incomes continue behind national levels

---- — INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — New Census Bureau figures show that the income of Indiana households trailed the national median by 9 percent last year.

The U.S. median household income for 2012 was just above $51,000. In Indiana, the median household income was about $46,700.

The Indianapolis Star reports that Indiana’s median household incomes have been falling behind the national mark since 2000.

The Indiana Community Action Association says that Indiana’s decline over that period was the fourth largest in the country.

Association policy analyst Derek Thomas calls it a “lost decade for Hoosier families.” Thomas says Indiana needs to attract the right kind of jobs or the next decade is likely to continue that trend.
