The Republican leader of the Indiana House says that passing a contentious “right-to-work” proposal will be his top priority during the coming legislative session.
House Speaker Brian Bosma made the announcement during a news conference this morning ahead of the Legislature’s Organization Day on Tuesday. Republican Senate President Pro Tem David Long says he will also push the bill in the Senate.
The issue sparked a five-week walkout by House Democrats during the 2011 session and union members are already set to protest at the Statehouse Tuesday.
A legislative study committee voted along party lines last month to support a proposal that would prohibit workers from being required to pay union representation fees. Opponents say such a law would depress wages and do nothing to attract good jobs.
