Former Indiana Sen. Birch Bayh was honored Thursday night at mid-court prior to the Indiana Fever’s game at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
Sen. Bayh was author of what became known as Title IX, landmark legislation that opened the door 40 years ago to gender equity in sports.
Bayh was born and raised on a farm near Shirkieville in Vigo County and began his career as a lawyer and state legislator in Terre Haute. He now lives in washington, D.C.
The Tribune-Star will publish a three-part series, produced by the newspaper’s owner CNHI, on Title IX and its enduring impact on American society. Part I of the series begins on Saturday and focuses on Bayh’s efforts to make it happen.
