LOOKING BACK: 1964: Officials push ahead on new high school Dorothy Jerse

TERRE HAUTE — Dorothy Jerse looks back at local history from 10, 25 and 50 years ago as reported in the Tribune and Tribune-Star.


• The Indiana Retired Teachers’ Association honored Trannie Grainger for outstanding community service in west-central Indiana. Grainger taught 26 years at Woodrow Wilson Junior High (Middle) School before retiring in 1996.

• The coveted McMillan Awards for outstanding high school athletes were won by Katelyn Bishop of Terre Haute South Vigo and Mike Russell of Terre Haute North Vigo.

• High school seniors John Loving, Terre Haute North Vigo, and Chastity Williams, Terre Haute South Vigo, were recognized for not missing a single day of school in 12 years.

• Entertainer Chubby Checker, the “King of Twist,” performed during the Kick-off Concert at the annual Wabash Valley Festival in Fairbanks Park. The Sunday Gospel Music Day paid tribute to the late Nancy Rooney.

• Construction of Hamilton Center’s 56-unit Lange Apartments, 1401 Lafayette Ave., was under way.

• Judy Buchholz was the new president of the League of Women Voters of Vigo County. Peg Evans, immediate past president, was elected first president of the Indiana League of Women Voters composed of 16 local leagues in the state.


• The Allegheny Commuter had stopped its operation of two daily flights between Hulman Regional Airport and Indianapolis.

• Paul Niece, age 9 years, was the overall winner in the 13th annual Big Wheel Race at the Wabash Valley Festival in Fairbanks Park. This was his fourth race and second overall win.

• Expansion and renovation to its building was part of Terre Haute Savings Bank’s 120th anniversary observance. The top five stories had been occupied by Levin & Co. until 1967 and removed in 1972.

• The 20th Indiana Special Olympics Summer Games opened on the Indiana State University campus with an estimated attendance of 2,000 athletes, 1,200 volunteers and 700 coaches.

• Mark Phillips celebrated the expansion of his E-Z Clean Corp., a complete janitorial supply house at 1027 Poplar Street.

• Joan Bonner retired after teaching music for 20 years, first at Concannon Junior High School and later at West Vigo Middle School.

• Joe Marcinko, veteran speech instructor at Terre Haute South Vigo High School, was retiring after 40 years of teaching.


• County school and city officials pushed ahead on a plan to construct a new high school to house Wiley and Honey Creek students on 70 acres of land at Paul Cox Field in exchange for the city block occupied by Wiley High School. Plans for the Wiley site called for a metered parking lot.

• Schultz & Co. rolled out the red carpet at their grand opening of its newly modernized downtown store at Fourth Street and Wabash Avenue. Roehm & Bros was the contractor.

• Vigo County delegates to the Democrat state convention unanimously endorsed Roger Branigin as their candidate for governor and Helen Corey as their candidate for nomination as the clerk of the Superior and Appellate Courts. Corey had served as secretary to Mayor Ralph Tucker.

• Judge H. Ralph Johnston said, “The new teenage night club program in Terre Haute and Vigo County can wait no longer,” explaining “local youth needs a place ‘NOW’.” Work was under way on The Loft soon to be opened at 673 1⁄2 Wabash Avenue.
