LOOKING BACK: 2002: Hyte Center building rededicated

TERRE HAUTE — 2002

• The ninth annual holiday celebration of cancer survivors and their families was hosted by Dr. Chandra Reddy of the Hope Center at Hulman Center.

• State Farm Insurance Co. contributed $30,000 to the Vigo County Fire Task Force to begin work toward reducing the number of arson fires. Terre Haute had one of the highest arson rates in the state.

• Drawings by Britney Klingele of St. Patrick’s School and Michael Feece of Hoosier Prairie Elementary School were chosen for the city’s official Christmas cards.

• Stop the War on Iraq, a Terre Haute organization, sponsored an Iraqi War Teach-In at the Vigo County Public Library. About 50 persons attended the event organized by Cathy McGuire.

• Community members celebrated the rededication of the 30-year-old Charles T. Hyte Center building, 13th Street and College Avenue, which had undergone a $300,000 renovation. The Rev. Cleytus Malone was the director.

• Attorneys Dave Friedrich and Martha Crossen received the Max E. Goodwin Equal Access to Justice awards at the District 7 Pro Bono Program dinner at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

1987

• The League of Women Voters asked Terre Haute Mayor P. Pete Chalos (D) and Vigo County Councilman Charles B. Fouty (R) questions about the likelihood of a combined city-county government. The officials felt the cost would be too high because rural residents would be entitled to city services (garbage, buses, street lights, etc.).

• About 100 inmates from Oakdale, La, and Atlanta, Ga., were flown into Hulman Regional Airport, of whom only about 30 were Cubans, were to be housed in Terre Haute. Warden Dudley Blevins said these inmates were not involved in the Atlanta prison riot and takeover.

• Officers of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Terre Haute were David Cramer, John W. Tipton, Jerry Tennis, Alex Kosarko Jr., Keith Lee, J. B. Cundiff and Mac Koie.

• Ten representatives from five local Catholic parishes met in Hellmann Hall of St. Benedict’s Church to deal with the problem of local poverty. Sister Ruth Eileen Dwyer was the discussion leader.

n Clinton native Ken Kercheval of “Dallas” fame narrated “Peter and the Wolf” with the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra.

1962

• Multi-colored lights had been strung to the top of the Vigo Courthouse dome. Passersby reported they could be seen for miles.

• Mrs. Robert Westrup chaired the fourth annual Union Hospital Benefit Ball at the Hotel Deming. Jimmy Adami and orchestra furnished music for dancing in the Cotillion Room and the Alan Barcus Trio played in the Aero Room.

• Sugar Creek Consolidated School patrons demanded action to stop the drainage of waste material from the nearby Derby Hill Truck Stop onto school property. After eight years of trying to have the problem resolved, a decision was made to correct it by the end of the year.

• “Flat tops, any style” were available at Norman’s Barber Shop, 201 N. 13th St.

• Paul E. Morse, operator of a 600-acre farm in Lewis, won the senior title in the 1962 Indiana Five-Acre Corn Growing Contest with a yield of 243 bushels per acre. Rotary Clubs sponsored the competition.
