Historical Treasure: ‘And the Band Played…’ at the historical museum

TERRE HAUTE — Music has been the center of entertainment throughout history. Today, even though technology engulfs our everyday lives, music is still a major source of entertainment. In fact, technology has made accessibility to music easier for all. Vigo County has a rich tradition with music, as bands have always been the center of a music community. Much of the old-style band music can now be heard via downloads, so present and future generations can enjoy the music of yesteryear.

For the past month, the Vigo County Historical Society has displayed its new exhibit, entitled “And the Band Played … Vigo County’s Music Scene Through the 1960s.” This display pays tribute to Vigo County’s bands and their part in the local musical history. One photo in this collection is a photo from the mid-1920s. It is a picture from a holiday party for the ISU Women’s League. This specific bash was staged at the Deming Hotel. It is a fascinating image to examine because it shows the pure enjoyment that music can bring to a party. The photo endorses the idea that music has always been at the center of entertainment.

Come and view this photo in person, along with the entire exhibit, at the Vigo County Historical Society Museum from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
