Looking Back: Gov. Bayh signs bill making Wabash the official state river in 1996

— Gov. Evan Bayh signed into law a bill making the Wabash the official state river.

— The theme of the Council on Domestic Abuse’s 10th anniversary dinner was “Safe Families/Safe World.” The event was staged in O’Shaughnessy Hall on the St. Mary-of-the-Woods campus.

— A gospel music dinner at the Palmer House, 2150 N. Third St., featured WTHI-TV’s Mark Allen, The Gospel Chords and Firm Foundation.

— Woodrow Wilson Middle School, coached by Bob Fischer, won its 12th straight team championship in the Indiana Mathcounts competition staged at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Team members Andrew Chi and Ryan Hamilton were named to represent Indiana at the national tournament.

— Terre Haute North Vigo won its fourth straight high school basketball sectional title with a 55-53 win over West Vigo. The win gave coach Jim Jones his 200th career victory.

— Great Dane Trailers announced 150 layoffs from its Brazil plant because of a declining market.


— A three-alarm fire destroyed the Shaw Equipment Co. Warehouse No. 103 in the Fort Harrison Industrial Complex.

— Civic and business leaders were searching for a tenant for the vacant A & P Quaker Maid plant, 300 N. Fruitridge Ave.

— Ground was broken for a $5.2 million Terre Haute Water Works Corp. plant expansion on the main station grounds at First and Elm streets. Joseph Sauer was the general manager.

— Mary Helen Clayton was elected president of the Terre Haute Newcomers Club.

— The public was invited to tour the 120-unit Maryvale Housing facility, which was now 95 percent complete at St. Mary-of-the-Woods.

— Eric Meister, General Telephone Co. general manager, and Fred Rubey of S-Tek Computer Services were elected president and vice president of Terre Haute Area Clean Community Inc.
