Looking Back: 1981 - JC Penney store in The Meadows shopping center scheduled to close

1996

-- Westminster Village, a continuing care retirement community on Davis Drive, marked its 15th anniversary.

-- Representatives of Union Hospital and the 76-bed Greene County General Hospital at Linton were discussing the possibility of an affiliation and management agreement. Mary Sherman Hospital in Sullivan had reached an affiliation agreement with Union in 1994.

-- Hendrich Title Co. moved from its first-floor courthouse office to 498 Ohio St. The space at the courthouse was being remodeled to house the Vigo County public defenders.

-- Kelly and Tony Greene were the new owners of Baskin-Robbins at 3801 E. Wabash Ave.

-- A federal survey showed Terre Haute area workers’ earnings ranked 10th of 11 metropolitan areas in Indiana.

-- The Bridal Cottage, owned and operated by Betty L. Heine and Juanita Maloof at 1600 S. Seventh St., celebrated its 20th anniversary.

-- Boyd and Carol Gibson changed the name of their Char-la Awards at 1437 Ohio St. to Recognition Plus.

1981

-- A delegation of Wabash Valley Republicans, headed by Vigo County Chairman Don Nattkemper and fundraiser Mose Kassis, was in Washington, D.C. to attend the inauguration of the 40th president of the United States, Ronald Reagan.

-- A number of local civic groups and church congregations celebrated the release of the 52 Americans held captive in Iran for more than a year.

-- Sedonya Osmon served as chairwoman of the Indiana State University Wives Club’s “Soup Luncheon” at Central Presbyterian Church. Margaret Tamar from The Canister presented the program.

-- The JC Penney Store in The Meadows shopping center was scheduled to close when the new facility opened in Honey Creek Square later in the year.

-- Penny Redlin introduced Beverly Light and Virginia Beesley, the new co-coordinators of the Friends of the Museum, at an open house at the museum. The Friends were a service group of the Vigo County Historical Society.
