LOOKING BACK: 1988: Senators call for new I-70 interchange

TERRE HAUTE — Dorothy Jerse looks back at local history from 10, 25 and 50 years ago as reported in the Tribune and Tribune-Star.


• Anderson Chiropractic, a part of the community for 11 years, held a grand re-opening in its new office at 4320 S. Seventh St.

• Julie Edwards succeeded George Bakker, who had served 30 years, as the Uniserv director for the Indiana State Teachers Association.

• Jenny Somerville and Meghan Bradley, Terre Haute North Vigo High School swimmers, finished in the top eight in the state competition at Indianapolis. This was the first time in school history that two girl swimmers advanced to medal competition.

• “Thunder in the Temple,” eight matches of professional boxing at the Zorah Shrine Temple, was the first pro-boxing event featured in Terre Haute in more than three years. West Terre Haute’s American Legion Post 501 assisted F&F Berns Boxing Inc. in organizing the event. The weigh-in was conducted at Dever Distributing Co.

• Mayor Judy Anderson proclaimed “Patrick Fortson Day” to honor Terre Haute’s “American Idol” television competition contestant.

• A large replica of Terre Haute’s former Union Station and other railroad memorabilia were part of “Train Sunday” at the Vigo County Historical Museum.


• Efforts were under way to organize a wheelchair basketball league in Terre Haute. Mike Hakeem had volunteered to be the coach.

• Anthony L. Mundell returned to Terre Haute to be the executive director of Westminster Village, 1120 Davis Ave.

• Judge Dexter Bolin, County Court Div. 5, gave up most of his $800 increase in salary to increase the pay of his three court employees. The Vigo County Council approved the transfer.

• Steve Schrohe was named president of International Tours of Terre Haute.

• A resolution asking the state to study the need for an additional interchange on Interstate 70 in Terre Haute was adopted in the Indiana Senate through the efforts of State Senators Ed Pease, James Monk and Robert Hellmann. Local officials said 30 percent of the motor vehicle accidents in Terre Haute happened at the I-70 and U.S. 41 interchange.

• General Manager Dick Snodgrass and Service Manager Dick Cross of Shanks AutoPlex acquired a German-engineered Fox car from Volkswagen of U.S. Inc. for the automotive instruction program on the local Ivy Tech campus.


• HELP (Housewives Effort for Local Progress) elected Carole Rust as its new president to succeed Jane Hazledine.

• The Terre Haute Lions Club planned to establish an eye bank collection center to secure pledges of persons who agreed to donate their corneas after death. Clarence Young was chair of this local club project to help restore the sight of blind or near-blind persons.

• The Jaycee Wives presented the “Continental Cruise Fashion Show-Bridge” at the Hotel Deming. Members and their husbands modeled fashions from Jame-Wolf women’s apparel shop and the Carl Wolf store for men. Mrs. Wayne Sherer was the general chairman.

• Frederick F. Jensen, Tumpane Co. plant manager, was named chairman of the 1963 United Fund campaign.

• Charles A. Cook, local retail advertising manager for the Tribune-Star, was presented the Silver Medal Award by the Advertising Club of Terre Haute and the local Chamber of Commerce.

• A Mardi Gras Costume Ball was staged at the American Legion, Fort Harrison Post 40 home. Omar Sutt and Lee Phifer headed the committee.
