Queries

• I am trying to find the parents of Ethel Mae Ruckman in Edgar County, Ill., and Vigo County, Ind. Ethel married, first, Peachie Swiger, and second, Sylvester Fidler. She can be found living with Sylvester Fidler in the Terre Haute city directories of 1927, 1929, 1934, 1936 and 1940. She died Feb. 10, 1942, in Vigo County. Most seem to have her parents as John S. Ruckman and Martha Jane Ruckman; however, they seem to be siblings, not married. Their parents were Anthony A. Ruckman (1830-1872) and Charity Crimmons (1843-?). I have found marriages for both John and Martha Jane - John to Mary Etta Smith and Martha to Charles A. Entrican, both in the Edgar County, Ill., marriage records.

The records indicate a first marriage for both John and Martha. Ethel Mae Ruckman doesn’t appear until she marries Peachie Swiger in 1907. In none of the censuses following their marriages is there an Ethel Mae Ruckman as daughter or step-daughter with either of them, nor is she with either grandparent.

Who are her real parents? Can anyone help? The Fidler line is the one I am currently following. Please contact Lorraine Hall at email manny magic@aol.com.

• I am seeking more information about Grace Hickson and her son, Robert Hickson, from Vigo County, Ind. There has been a bit of a mystery in my family surrounding a Robert Marcel Hickson. We are unsure if Marcel is his real middle name. We do know that he was born around 1900 and had family in Indiana. He stayed with Neva McGlaughlin in West Virginia for a period of time until she became pregnant. This child, a son, was born in 1925. He was named Robert, as well.

We do have Y-DNA in hopes of finding a match for the male line of this part of our family. Any information you might be able to fill in would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Ranielle Blohm, 87 Fuente, Rancho Santa Margarita, CA 92688, phone 949-421-9127, or email Rainblohm@gmail.com.

• I am trying to find the parents and siblings of Elijah D. Burress. He is buried in Sullivan County, Ind., in the Burris Cemetery. He was born on Jan 16, 1805, and died on June 7, 1881. He married Susanna Zink about 1839. They had the following children, all born in Sullivan County: Elisha Burress, married Mary Ann Secrest; Louisa Jane Burress, married Jacob Secrest; Nancy Caroline Burress, married James Hayes and lived in the Dick Johnson Twp. of Clay County, Ind.; Mary Elizabeth Burress, married Hugh Headley and they lived in Shannon County, Mo.; Mathew James or James Mathew Burress, married Elza Hawk or Howk; Amos Pierce Burris, married Sara Jane Secrest; James A. Burress, married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Borders; Samuel Burris, married Martha Stanley and Lettie Heath, and they lived in Sullivan and Greene counties, Ind. Unless mentioned otherwise, the rest of Elijah’s children lived and died in Sullivan County. Any help would be deeply appreciated. Please email me at ronnieb1@att.net or call 812-665-2533. Thanks, Ronnie B.
