LOOKING BACK: 1960: Woolworth’s advertised new states puzzles with views of Alaska, Hawaii

TERRE HAUTE — Dorothy Jerse looks back at local history from 10, 25 and 50 years ago as reported in the Tribune and Tribune-Star.

2000

• A flu outbreak hit residents of the Wabash Valley and increased sales of two new prescription drugs, Relenza and Tamiflu.

• For the ninth consecutive year, the Terre Haute North Vigo High School upperclass Knowledge Masters team placed first in the state. Martha Layton was the team director.

• Gerald Lindsay was named Vigo County highway superintendent to replace Cindy Wallace who had become Terre Haute street commissioner.

• Coca-Cola reintroduced its legendary contoured glass bottles in America in the form of an eight-ounce replica bottle of Coca-Cola Classic. The trademark bottle had been created in 1915 at the Root Glass Co. in Terre Haute.

• An exhibit, “Free At Last: The History of the Abolitionist Movement in the United States” from the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati opened at the Vigo County Public Library. The display was one of Terre Haute’s events celebrating the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

• Pfizer Inc. announced plans to build a new research and development facility as part of its Animal Health Research Unit in Vigo County.

1985

• Incumbent Rep. Vern Tincher (D-Riley), challenged by James Brighton (R-Martinsville) for the 46th District seat, was to be seated after the decision of the House Select Recount Committee was approved by a House vote.

• Herb and Jeri Redman were honored by the American Heart Association, Indiana Affiliate, for their work with the Vigo County Unit.

• The state dropped out of the running for the acquisition of nearly 1,500 acres of federal surplus property south of the city allowing the county and city to acquire it for possible economic development. An ammunition-manufacturing site during WWII, it had become a prison farm in 1949.

• Charles Fouty, the Vigo County Council’s lone Republican, was elected council president.
