LOOKING BACK: 1987: League of Women Voters reorganizes

TERRE HAUTE — 2002

• High school athletes Jackie Gustafson (Terre Haute South Vigo) and Shawn Nevill (West Vigo) were the recipients of the fifth Willard M. Kehrt Mental Attitude Award.

• Hobb Partners LLC, based in Kansas, purchased the Plaza North Shopping Center from Plaza North Partnership, a Ragle & Co. enterprise, and Plaza North Inc., headed by president Tony Hulman George. The shopping center had been established in 1965.

• Downtown Terre Haute Inc. awarded Heritage Ambassador Awards to Sunset Harbor for its restoration of the Sycamore Building, the Terre Haute Urban Enterprise Association for its facade grant program and the Stained Glass Sunday organizers.

• Terre Haute Landmarks Inc. recognized Charlie Williams of WilliamsRandall, 641 Ohio St., and the Friends of Historic Allen Chapel for their restoration efforts.

• The Terre Haute South Vigo team won its first Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference title in high school baseball with a 13-0 victory over Ben Davis. David Verdeyen was the winning pitcher.

1987

• The Terre Haute Chapter of the League of Women Voters, which had disbanded about four years before, reorganized with new officers Lynne Kelley, Geraldine Conaty and Anne Bell.

• TW Express, operated by Resort Air, began offering daily flights between Terre Haute and St. Louis. It was the third commuter airline to service Terre Haute as it joined Britt Airways, doing business as Continental Express, and Allegheny Commuter operated by Kentucky Airlines.

• DeBaun Funeral Home purchased five acres of land at the corner of First Street and Springhill Road for construction of a second funeral home. This was the former site of Thomas Mobile Homes.

• David and Joan Voltmer and Shirley Rickert co-chaired the fourth MADD Dash at Deming Park with the help of about 100 volunteers. This Mothers Against Drunk Driving event drew 269 runners.

• The Ross Printing Center, 700 Walnut St., was purchased by Dan Hester who planned to rename it the Hester Building and move his Media Marketing Consultants office there.

1962

• The Japanese Department of State contacted Mayor Ralph Tucker expressing gratitude for Terre Haute's acceptance of a “sister city” relationship with the people of Tajimi, Japan.

• The headline “SCHOOL FIGHT IS INTENSE” was distributed with handbills attacking the current school administration by people who were “agin everything.” Thirty candidates spread among Districts 1-5 were seeking office. Those elected included John Sutherland, the only incumbent member, Arch R. Dunbar, Ralph McHargue, Peter A. Farmer, William Kessel, William Diehl and Paul D. Haas. This was the first elected board since reorganization of the county schools into one Vigo County School Corp.

• A total of 273 athletes representing 33 local schools competed in the Indiana high school sectional track meet at Rose Polytechnic Institute. Wiley came in first and Gerstmeyer second. Emmett Tyler, Garfield, won the shot put event. Bob Sandberg, Gerstmeyer, won the half mile.

• Construction was under way of a large supermarket at Locust and 11th streets just west of Gerstmeyer High School. John R. Holdren, Conren Inc. president, said it would house the “Great Scot Market.”
