TERRE HAUTE — 2003: Colts arrived in Terre Haute to begin their fifth preseason training camp at Rose

Dorothy Jerse looks back at local history from 10, 25 and 50 years ago as reported in the Tribune and Tribune-Star.


•The Indianapolis Colts, coached by Tony Dungy, arrived in Terre Haute to begin their fifth preseason training camp at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

• Matt Sherertz and Amy Thiemann won the 2003 Terre Haute Junior City Golf championships.

• The Helping Hands Providence Co-op, a not-for-profit clothing thrift store, opened in a former IGA storage area on U.S. 40 in West Terre Haute.

• Dr. Scot C. Mardis was named the 2003 Honor Dentist of the Western Indiana Dental Society for his service and leadership. Dr. Michael J. Lawyer was recognized as a 25-year member.

• The Riley and Brazil fire departments gained funds for new equipment through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The announcement was made by the office of U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar (R-Ind.) to Riley Chief Jeff Fox and Brazil Chief Joe Bennett.

• Former Vigo County Sheriffs Ted Melvin and Andy Atelski visited the jail at the invitation of Sheriff Jon Marvel. They compared the changes which had come about regarding security, increased number of inmates, overcrowding and the epidemic of methamphetamine.


• Martha Gossage, West Vigo High School senior, reigned over the Vigo County Fair.

• The Best Western of Terre Haute hotel at Interstate 70 and U.S. 41 opened its new nightclub, Be Bops, featuring an oldies format. Cynthia M. Wyatt was the general manager.

• The Terre Haute North Vigo High School cheer team returned from Tokyo, Japan, after finishing first in the Miss Drill Team International Competition. A crowd greeted them at the Indianapolis Airport and a caravan, arranged by Chuck Culp, brought them home to a reception at the school. Rossi  Mills was the coach, Meg Merrill the team sponsor.

• More than 300 alumni, guests, patients and staff members attended the Lamb Center's annual reunion. The center had opened three years before in Terre Haute Regional Hospital.

• Dave McCampbell placed first in the annual Fort Harrison Elks Amateur Golf Championship.

• Terre Haute Park Board members had their first look at the $65,000 refurbished chapel at Highland Lawn Cemetery. Patrick Ralston, superintendent, reported the building was being used by various denominations for burial ceremonies.


• Despite the fact that the city and county would no longer qualify for federal funds unless area planning and zoning were in operation, a disagreement in the matter continued to exist between Vigo County officials.

• The Kiwanis Club sponsored the Indianapolis Clowns vs the touring Brooklyn Stars in a comedy and entertaining baseball game at Memorial Stadium.

• The Newlin-Johnson Development Co. announced plans for a new $1.5 million shopping center, Plaza North, at Fort Harrison Road and Lafayette Avenue.

• Gene Verostko won over Tye Bensley for the City Match Play Tournament title at Rea Park sponsored by McMillan Sports.

• The Meis store sent six area teenagers, members of the Meis fashion advisory board, to New York to learn what was new in fall fashions. They were Cindy Pfennig, Dianne Drummy, Deanna Sturgell, Leslie Krieble, Bob Ross and Dan Fitzgerald.

• The First Congregational Church of Terre Haute named the Rev. Louis R. Gerhardt of Seattle to succeed the Rev. George E. Mitchell who was retiring after 19 years of service.
