LOOKING BACK: 2004: Engineers designing extension of Locust Street from 25th to Brown Dorothy Jerse

TERRE HAUTE — Dorothy Jerse looks back at local history from 10, 25 and 50 years ago as reported in the Tribune and the Tribune-Star.

2004

• Bridget Lee, Chauncey Rose Middle School eighth grader, won the 21st annual Tribune-Star Wabash Valley Spelling Bee at Sarah Scott Middle School.  

• Engineers were designing the extension of Locust Street from 25th Street to Brown Avenue. Pat Goodwin was the city engineer.

• Kara Bunting, Terre Haute South Vigo sophomore, won the girls individual championship at the Indiana High School Bowling Program state finals in Indianapolis. The next day she won the girls Division I championship of the monthly Kegler Open at Muncie. Mike Gambill was South's team coach; Matt Lugar was her personal coach.

• Suzy Cole, a Vigo County child welfare supervisor, said more foster parents were desperately needed to care for the many children coming into the system as a result of the meth problem. New petitions for Children in Need of Service in Vigo County had increased from 52 in 2000 to 165 in 2003.

• A memorial garden in memory of students, staff members and loved ones who had passed away was dedicated at Chauncey Rose Middle School.

1989

• The Indiana Senate approved a bill, introduced by Sen. Robert Hellmann, D-Terre Haute, and Ed Pease, R-Brazil, to establish an Institute of Recycling on the Indiana State University campus. Rep. Jerome Kearns, D-Terre Haute, had introduced the bill in the House where it was also approved.

n Larry Seeley and Margaret Green were inducted into the local Bowling Hall of Fame at the 20th annual Terre Haute Bowlers Hall of Fame and Recognition Dinner.  Bob Poynter was recognized for his organization of the group for many years.

• Tony McGee and Steve Richardson (Terre Haute South Vigo), Kenny Rowan (Northview), and Tommy Thornton (West Vigo) were named to Hoosier Basketball Magazine's list of Top 100 high school senior basketball players for the 1988-89 season.

• Terre Haute Elks Lodge No. 86 honored four Vigo County School Corp. high school seniors in its Most Valuable Student contest. First -place winners were Susan Hagness (Terre Haute North) and Anthony Chin (West Vigo). Second places went to Frieda Cooke (Terre Haute South) and Robert Hastings (Terre Haute North).

1964

• The Home Packing Co. filed a $5 million damage suit against the Terre Haute Gas Corp. to recover losses in the 1963 explosion.

• The American Society of Women Accountants hosted a tax forum regarding “Current Tax Structure on Corporations” and “Indiana Sales and Use Tax' in the Terre Haute House Prairie Room. Mildred Bechold, Ada Stantz, Esther Evans and Bertha Meyer made up the committee.

• Mayor Ralph Tucker, a former Boys Club member, welcomed more than 125 directors of some 40 Indiana Boys Clubs of America and members of their boards of directors meeting in Terre Haute for their Hoosier Area council meeting. Ted Moore was the executive director of the local club.

• Royal Tire Service, 1825 Wabash Ave., advertised a sale in celebration of 15 years with U.S. Royal. The company officers were Ronald Adams, Harry Adams and Ralph Nolte.

• The Elks Club presented the Vigo County Championship trophy to the Gerstmeyer High School basketball team coached by Howard Sharpe. The team captains were Darrell Stewart, Mike Phillips and Les Ross.
