HISTORICAL TREASURE: The charm of Christmas past

TERRE HAUTE — While doing some research in our archives, I found the “Brown Section” picture. It set the theme for my Historical Treasure and the following “reminiscences” of holidays past in Terre Haute.

The featured photo of the giant Christmas tree (30 feet tall) graced the Union Railroad Station in 1929.

The special holiday windows in the Root Store were filled with dolls, running electric trains and animated elves helping Santa make all kinds of wonderful toys.

Wabash Avenue was aglow with lighted garland wrapped around the street light poles and strings of colored lights forming a canopy over the street.

The large parade held the day after Thanksgiving welcomed Santa Claus to town.

Crowds of shoppers, loaded down with gifts, made their way down Wabash Avenue to the tune of the jingling bells at the Salvation Army kettles.

Santa still arrives (at the Mall) and shopper’s crowd the stores, but something magic has been lost in the commercial frenzy of today. Indulge me — approach this holiday season with the slower pace of years gone by. Don’t get lost in the hectic pace of “The Season.” Relax. Remember. Enjoy.
