GENEALOGY: List shows soldiers discharged from the War of 1812

TERRE HAUTE — The National Archives Records Administration has posted a list of the soldiers of the regular army who were discharged from the War of 1812. The web site is at

On this site you can view the following information: a list of soldiers receiving discharge certificates, a list of soldiers by name, a list of soldiers by unit, a list of units and subunits, a list of company and detachment commanders.

This site lists only the names of soldiers from the regular army who were issued discharge papers. It also lists the year, regiment, and company in which the soldier served.

It is not complete for every soldier who served in the War of 1812, however, since no militiamen or volunteers are included.

It is a site worth checking out if you had an ancestor or relative who served in 1812.

The Indiana State Historical Society is offering free admission to the Indiana Experience exhibit on Martin Luther King Day, Monday. Also featured will be “family-friendly crafts and activities, storytelling by Deborah Asante, historic gym classes featuring 1930s calisthenics, and two exhibits – Freedom: A History of Us and The Legacy of Civil Rights in Indianapolis.” The events will be located in the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center, 450 West Ohio Street, Indianapolis. • Eugene G. Owen in Hoopeston, Vermilion County, Illinois, was born in 1916. He is on the 1940 census, age 24, and is married to a woman named Audrey, age 22. Eugene is the son of Marshall Owen and Alice Logan. They are listed in the 1930 census, also having a daughter named Kathlyn Owen. Alice Logan was born in March 1897. She is the daughter of John Logan and Dora Lungram or Tungram (not sure of the spelling) from Lafayette, Tippecanoe County, Indiana. However on the 1900 and 1910 census John and Dora Logan are living in Hoopeston, Illinois. In 1930 John Logan is living with Marshall and Alice Logan, listed as age 59. John Logan is the son of William Logan, an Irishman, and Catherine (Harmon) Moore. John had three other siblings and four half brothers. The half brothers are from Catherine’s first marriage in 1855 in Lafayette, Indiana, to Elijah Moore. Elijah Moore is my main interest and I am hoping by following this line that someone knows about him. I do not know if Eugene had children or what Audrey’s maiden name was, but I suspect he married again, maybe in Missouri. Please contact Betty VanLeer with any information, email

• I have been trying to find the maiden name of the wife of Joseph Correll who lived in Sullivan County, Indiana. (I am wondering if her name was Mary Ann Keever, but I can’t find any connection with her and any Keever.) Joseph’s parents were Samuel Correll and Mary Queen. Joseph Correll’s family is from Iredell County, North Carolina, and Joseph’s aunt Mary Ann Correll married a Joseph Keever, but there is no evidence of Joseph himself marrying a Keever. Joseph Correll and his wife Mary Ann met and married in North Carolina or Tennessee, because their oldest daughter was born in Tennessee. Mary Ann was possibly part Cherokee Indian, or maybe full-blooded. Anyone knowing anything about Joseph and Mary Ann Correll of Sullivan County, Indiana, please contact Paul White at email
