Genalogy: Gen Gathering site a great opportunity to volunteer

TERRE HAUTE — Gen Gathering is a website that aims to match volunteers who have access to resources and are willing to do someone a favor, with researchers who need help. The group launched its website several months ago,, and has had much success since then. They now report that the site has 1,965 registered users and 2,076 individual resources that can be tapped.

Registration is free. Here’s how it works: If you want to volunteer, you register at the site and then post the volunteer tasks you are willing to do and a time frame in which the requester can expect the task to be completed. For example, I have several CD databases at home. I registered that I was willing to do look-ups in these CDs and would do the look-up within two weeks. I have had a number of requests that I receive via email. I look the requested information up on the appropriate CD, and then I report my findings back to the requester via email.

The types of volunteer acts a person can do is virtually limitless. You can do look-ups in books and other resources that you have at home, volunteer to go to courthouses or libraries, take a photo of a grave, or utilize genealogy Internet sites to which you subscribe. And the list goes on.

On the other side of the coin, you can look through the many “regional” volunteer offerings, grouped by state and county, or search through the family histories grouped by surname. In addition, there are discussion forums in which you can participate.

All in all, this is a worthwhile site that, as it grows, is serving more and more people.

n Seeking information on three generations of John McCarty’s: John McCarty, his father and his grandfather.

The first (senior) John McCarty was born in Virginia and married Sally Torian in early 1798. The second John (Jr.) was their firstborn child, born about 1798.

The second John married Mary Harris in 1813 in Caldwell County, Kentucky. Mary was the daughter of Stephen Harris, and Nancy Conway. I have been trying to find the senior John’s parents’ names. In Caldwell County, Kentucky, John Jr. and Mary had four children: John (III), Marcus, Lewis and Isabel, some of whom moved to Indiana. His first wife Mary Harris McCarty passed away in Caldwell County about 1830, and John Jr. married his second wife, Mary Johnson. In the 1830s, they moved to Sullivan County, Indiana. They had four children, Stephen, Sarah, Mary and Martha. By 1860 his second wife Mary Johnson McCarty was deceased, and John Jr. was living in Hutsonville, Illinois. John Jr. then moved with another son to Crawford County, Illinois, about 1870. He passed away there in the 1870s. John McCarty III was born in Caldwell (now Lyon) County, Kentucky. In the 1830s, he and his father (John Jr.) and family moved to Sullivan County, Indiana. When John Jr. moved with another son to Crawford County, Illinois, about 1870, John III moved to Leon County, Texas. A fourth John, John McCarty IV, had moved to Texas about 5 years before. Anyone having any information on this family, please contact Paul White at email

n Looking for any information on Edwin James Kilpatrick, born Sept. 25, 1869, in Danville, Vermillion County, Ill. His family eventually moved to San Francisco. He married Dorothea E. Humphrey Wolfe on Jan. 14, 1914. Any information on this family would be so appreciated. Please contact Victoria Glover at email
