TERRE HAUTE — Dorothy Jerse looks back at local history from 10, 25 and 50 years ago as reported in the Tribune- and Tribune-Star.

1999

• Following heavy rains, the site of the Indianapolis Colts training camp was moved from the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology campus to Indiana State University’s Memorial Stadium.

• North Terre Haute Little League 11-12-year-olds team, managed by Tom Cummins, earned a spot in the state tournament.

• Larry Bird’s Home Court Hotel was sold to LALJI Investments, LLC, and would lose Bird’s famous name and memorabilia. The hotel had been owned by Greg Gibson, Max Gibson and Bird.

• Wayne Newton Post 346 American Legion baseball team won the regional and state championships and moved on to the Great Lakes Regional at Midland, Mich. The post 346 junior team won its first junior state championship at Newburgh.

• Cara Stuckey, 1999 Terre Haute South High School graduate, won her first Women’s City Golf championship.

• The Sporting News magazine ranked Terre Haute as 144th best sports city out of 351 American cities. The Colts’ summer training camp at Rose-Hulman and Indiana State’s successful NCAA Div. 1 basketball teams were factors in the ranking.

1984

• Larry Bird arrived by helicopter at Fairbanks Park, where he was met by an estimated 6,500 fans who wanted to say “thank you” for his winning the National Basketball Association championship “for Terre Haute.”

• Kraig C. McKee, a recent graduate of Indiana University School of Dentistry, opened his office at 3528 Wabash Ave. in association with his father Carl R. McKee.

• Poff’s Sporting Goods Inc., 1323 Lafayette Ave., announced the grand opening of its Boy Scout and Girl Scout departments. Sally Gilliland represented the Girl Scouts and Mark McAninch the Boy Scouts.

• Susan Siebenmorgen Amos, M.D., became an associate with her father, Dr. Paul Siebenmorgen in his practice of family medicine. It was believed this was the first time one family had provided three generations of medical doctors to the Terre Haute community. Dr. Paul Siebenmorgen had entered practice with his father, Dr. Louis Siebenmorgen, in 1946.
