LOOKING BACK: 1989: Lisa Williamson crowned Miss Indiana

TERRE HAUTE — Dorothy Jerse looks back at local history from 10, 25 and 50 years ago as reported in the Tribune and Tribune-Star.

2004

• The YWCA Barkley Complex opened at First and Farrington streets.  The former softball facility had been renovated with $300,000 from the Mary Barkley estate.

• Ted Kaperak and Sharon Horrall were the winners of the Hulman Links golf tournament championships.

• The Vigo County Historical Society unveiled the restored Tiffany-style glass canopy at the entrance of the museum. The canopy had once hung over Madam Edith Brown’s brothel.

• Robert Thompson purchased the former WBAK-TV station site across from his Toyota and Honda dealership at First and Ohio streets.

• Mayor Kevin Burke announced the contract to manage Terre Haute’s wastewater treatment plant held by American Water would not be extended as of Jan. 1.  The city would take over the plant management.

• The Terre Haute Parks and Recreation Department approved plans to build a skate park in Voorhees Park. Greg Ruark was the park superintendent.

n The U.S. Census Bureau reported a decrease of 1.2 percent to 104,550 in Vigo County and a decrease of 2.7 percent to 58,096 in the city of Terre Haute since the 2000 Census.

1989

• Frank Kleptz and his son David were competing in the Interstate Batteries Great American Race driving a 1912 Haynes Speedster. In 1986, driving a 1903 Stevens Duryea, they had won for having the oldest car to finish the race.

• Matt Roberts, recent Terre Haute North High School graduate who had won a national contest to establish a teenage nightclub in the city, was unable to find a building to lease.

• Brooke Hoff was the pageant princess of the Riley Lions 19th annual Summer Festival.

• The Volunteers of America, a non-profit human service agency since at least 1907, was seeking more visibility in the community. Residential group living arrangements for persons with disabilities were provided at Brandon House, 1140 S. Sixth St., since 1967 and Brandon House Annex since 1985. Mary Branca was the director.

• Lisa Williamson, Terre Haute North Vigo High School graduate and Indiana University graduate student, was crowned Miss Indiana at Michigan City and would represent the state in the Miss America pageant in September.

1964

• A crowd welcomed officials from Terre Haute’s sister city, Tajimi, Japan, to a week of planned activities.  Mayor Ralph Tucker had visited Tajimi in 1962.

• S. T. Proffitt, staff member at Wiley High School since 1939, was named the new principal.

• Gene Verotsko of Rea Park and Bill Gayso of Linton each shot 71 to tie, winning the Tournament of Champions at the Country Club or Terre Haute. Warren Artz of the Elks placed third with a 72.

• About 150 citizens turned out for a City Council meeting to object to the construction of a $1 million apartment house project to be built just east of 25th Street along the south side of Poplar Street. The Council voted it down despite Mayor Tucker's approval. Bert O. Williams, realtor, had been one of the developers who arranged for the purchase of the land from the Immanuel Lutheran Church.

• Downtown Cadillac, 18 S. Ninth St., displayed Ted Bauer's handsome 1926 Cadillac beside a sleek 1964 model. Esten Fuson was the manager.
