TERRE HAUTE — This week there is a query about an old cemetery in Parke County, that is believed to have been destroyed:

Seeking information about an old Parke County cemetery. Looking for anyone who might know the names of anyone buried in an unnamed cemetery located in Parke County, Jackson Township, Rockville. Locals called it “Harris Cemetery.” It was off Indiana 59 and County Road 720 South. All the stones were destroyed in the 1980s and there are no records left. Three known burials were Benjamin Harris, Asenath Marshall and George Marshall. If you have old pictures of the stones that were there or remember seeing any particular names, please contact me. I have posted it as the “Harris Cemetery” on Find-a-Grave. Thank you. Cathea Curry, P.O. Box 533, Piedmont, Okla. 73078 or e-mail CatheaC@sbcglobal. net.

Also this week continues with another list of service men who died of disease or were killed in battle during World War I. This Vermillion County list was taken from the book, “Gold Star Honor Roll: A Record of Indiana Men and Women who Died in the Service of the United States and the Allied Nations in the World War, 1914-1918.” The entire book can be downloaded to an e-reader for free at Each entry in the book features a photo of the person and a short biography.
