TERRE HAUTE —
A recent news release announced the following: “Family Tree Magazine, America’s No. 1 family history publication, recently recognized the Indiana State Library Genealogy Collection among the “2013 Best State Websites” for the third-consecutive year and Indiana Memory for the first time. “Being recognized by Family Tree Magazine is always a great honor for the Indiana State Library,” said Roberta L. Brooker, State Librarian of Indiana. “Each year, this designation enables us to introduce our online resources and collections to family history researchers across the globe.” ’
For those unacquainted with the Indiana Memory project, it is “a digital library providing free access to Indiana’s unique cultural and historical heritage through a variety of digital formats. Administered by the Indiana State Library, it is a collaboration of Indiana libraries, museums, archives and related cultural organizations.” Visit this library online at www.in.gov/memories/.
Finding military records online can be a challenge; there are so many web sites in cyberspace, some free and some charging a fee. Also, many just specialize in a particular conflict or a specific state.
But there is a helpful web site you can go to as a central location and a jumping-off spot to find the information you seek: Online Military Records and Indexes at www.militaryindexes.com/ index.html.
Click on a war, and go to a page that lists links to general and miscellaneous web sites for that conflict, as well sites for the records of each state. The links listed will include both free databases and those that charge a fee for service.
This was created by Joe Bein and seems to be regularly updated. It also has links to other sites that he has created; click on “other genealogy records” and go to links for Death Indexes, Records, Obituaries and Cemetery Burials on the Internet (USA), Online Birth and Marriage Records Indexe – also includes some divorce indexes (USA), Ship Passenger Lists on the Internet, US Census Records on the Internet, and Online Naturalization Indexes and Records (USA).
The publishers of Family Chronicle, History Magazine and Internet Genealogy are offering a special book bundle that includes six of their books for $40.
