GENEALOGY: DAR currently has 170,000 members nationally

TERRE HAUTE — The DAR, Daughters of the American Revolution, is a national society of women who can trace their ancestry directly to an American Patriot who served in the American Revolution. A Patriot is defined as a person who served as a soldier, sailor, civil officer, or one who rendered aid and comfort to those fighting for independence.

The DAR was founded on Oct. 11, 1890, and currently has 170,000 members nationally and more than 3,000 local chapters. Its objectives are patriotic (taking part in national events as well as naturalization ceremonies), historical (identifying Revolutionary veterans' graves and placing historical markers at sites of interest), and educational (maintenance of their library and sponsoring scholarships). Those wishing to join the DAR must be at least 18 years of age and have to be able to prove lineal descent from a Patriot of the American Revolution. The National Society is located in Washington, DC. The Indiana Chapter is located in Indianapolis and can be found at

The FamilySearch Web site has added some Indiana and Illinois information to their pilot project databases, including the Adams County, Indiana, marriages (1811-1959) and the Allen County, Indiana, marriages (1811-1959). These are just part of the state-wide marriage records for Indiana being placed on the site. Also up are the Indiana Marriage Returns (1882-1905). For Illinois, the Cook County Birth Registers (1905-1916) and the Cook County Birth Certificates, Part 1 (1916-1922) are also on the site. Go to, click on “Search Records” and then on “Record Search Pilot” to be able to search and these record collections.

• I am a descendent of James F. “Frank” Rogers and Elizabeth Hines of Vigo County, Indiana. They had two sons Adelbert “Delbert” Clifton Rogers and Oscar Frank Rogers. The parents of James F. Rogers are James Oliver Rogers and Evana Lenderman. Evana was the daughter of Leonard Lenderman and Sarah Shank. Census data shows that Sarah Shank was born in North Carolina. But information on shows that she was born in Virginia. My father, Robert James Rogers, grew up knowing Sarah Opal Funkhouser as “Aunt Opal.” Sarah Opal Funkhouser was the daughter of John Bruce Funkhouser and Luretha Lenderman. Luretha Lenderman is the sister of Evana Lenderman. I have many old photographs of the Rogers, Lenderman, and Funkhouser families. I do not know many of these people. My father has identified Opal Funkhouser in several of the pictures. I would love to verify and trade photos with someone. One of the photos is labeled as grandma Lenderman, who would be the grandmother of James F. Rogers because James O. Rogers married Evana Lenderman. Please contact Rob Rogers at e-mail
