Special to the Tribune-Star

Dorothy Jerse looks back at local history from 10, 25 and 50 years ago as reported in the Tribune and Tribune-Star.

1998

• It was a victorious Friday night for Vigo County football teams: West Vigo over visiting Northview, 24-7; Terre Haute South at Lawrence North, 26-19; and Terre Haute North at home over Center Grove, 17-9.

• Trees Inc. volunteers were planting about 35,000 daffodil bulbs throughout the community. The effort had begun a year ago when the group organized the planting of about 71,000 bulbs.

• The winners of the Terre Awards, sponsored by the Greater Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce and the Tribune-Star Publishing Co., were Bob Murray, Tom Miller, David Felstein, Don Mighell, Marlene Lu, Alan Ley, Angela Tsai and Josh Zuerner. Charles Combs received the John K. Lamb Award and Bill Kirby, departing Vigo County educator, was presented with a special Community Service award.

• Rudy Stakeman, owner of Tuff Stuff, dedicated his new building in the Vigo County Industrial Park in memory of his uncle, Vigo County Commissioner P. James Diehl.

• Chauncey Rose Middle School students painted their Royal logo on the street at North 13th Street and Third Avenue.

1983

• President Richard Landini accepted the Spirit of Special Olympics Award on behalf of Indiana State University at the award dinner in Indianapolis. ISU had been the headquarters for Indiana Special Olympics since 1969.

• Bob Clements, head football coach at Terre Haute South Vigo High School since the school opened, announced he would retire at the end of the season.

• Tom Wheeler, director of the Samaritan Food Project in operation for one year, reported they were feeding about 400 people a week. The number of participating churches had grown from four to 25 during the year.

• The name of Woodburn Printing Co., 25 S. Sixth St., had been changed to Woodburn Graphics Inc. to reflect its expansion. Don Pendergast was the president.

• Air passenger traffic at Hulman Regional Airport had recently increased. Britt Airways scheduled flights from Terre Haute three times daily en route to Chicago.

• Vigo County veterans received more than $6.93 million during fiscal 1982. The largest amount, $5.21 million, was compensation to disabled war veterans and pensions to older veterans with non-service connected disabilities.

1958

• Fire destroyed Jensen Television and Appliances, 829 Wabash Ave., and damaged Rust Brothers Recreation next door. Three firefighters were injured.

• The Atlantic Brewing Co. announced its intention to discontinue operations at the Terre Haute Brewing plant, 440 S. Ninth St., effective Nov. 1. Champagne Velvet and Red Top Beer were to be brewed in Chicago.

• A solemn high mass marked the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Seelyville Holy Rosary Church.

• Firestone, 919 Wabash Ave., advertised an “in-the-crate bicycle” sale. A Firestone Speed Cruiser sold for $37.87

• Lakewood Subdivision, located in Riley and developed by Ernest Froderman, opened. It covered 160 acres with a 40-acre lake in the center.

• The National Y-Teen Roll Call Week was observed by the YWCA. Some 1,300 girls were members of 18 Y-Teen clubs in Vigo County junior and senior high schools.
